- As estruturas silábicas e a redução vocálica no Português Europeu.Publication . Miguel, Maria Augusta CavacoThis paper discusses vowel behavior in relation to syllable structure in European Portuguese. The analysis is based on Government Phonology (Kaye, Lowenstamm and Vergnaud, 1985, 1990). We will argue that syllabic constituents in European Portuguese determine, to a great extent, vowel behavior. Branching nuclei and rhymes are the structures which most clearly determine the value of vowels in unstressed positions. As we will see throughout this paper, vowel reduction is clearly conditioned by syllable structures.

- O tempo e o espaço : a errância na lírica camonianaPublication . Fraga, Maria do CéuSe n’«Os Lusíadas» a viagem representa o triunfo do homem sobre os elementos e permite aos heróis ultrapassarem a própria natureza humana, nas Rimas camonianas o tema ganha colorações muito diferentes. Camões opera poeticamente a confusão entre espaço e tempo que Jankélévitch considerou ser o fulcro da percepção nostálgica. “Peregrino vago errante”, Camões explora ecos de ressonância autobiográfica para exprimir em termos de espaço a desorientação introspectiva de índole lírica. No presente estudo, mostra‑se como os símbolos e os valores que se associam à viagem são reinterpretados e reelaborados nas «Rimas» de forma a dar amplidão universalizante à expressão de uma personalidade plurifacetada. Ao mesmo tempo, a análise operada permite concluir que não há contradição essencial no tratamento dado ao tema na epopeia e na poesia lírica, e que em ambos os casos se manifesta a sensibilidade típica do maneirismo, aliada à exploração de gêneros literários diferentes.
- Traduire l’étranger De Mau Tempo no Canal à Gros Temps sur L'archipelPublication . Faria, DominiqueCet article traite de la traduction française du roman portugais de Vitorino Nemésio, Mau tempo no Canal (1944). Dans cet ouvrage, l'auteur açoréen présente un portrait de la société et de la culture de l'archipel des Açores du début du vingtième siècle. La traduction étant un moyen privilégié pour faire connaître l'étranger, il s'agit d'étudier les options de traduction adoptées dans la version française (1988). Deux groupes de traits caractéristiques sont pris en considération: les représentations des parlers régionaux et les descriptions des festivités des îles.
- La revue Colóquio Letras et la mise en valeur de la traduction au PortugalPublication . Faria, DominiqueColóquio Letras is a scientific Portuguese literary journal founded in 1971. Although most of its articles focus on Portuguese literature but some of them deal with the translation of literature. This paper studies the articles on translation published between 1980 and 1985. During these five years, 92 texts about translation were published, ranging from signalling new translations, to book reviews and testimonies from translators about their own experience of translating. This journal therefore seems to have played an important, yet unacknowledged, role in the development of translation studies in Portugal in this period.
- Écrire contre : Le projet d’écriture d’Éric ChevillardPublication . Faria, DominiqueThis article studies the work of French contemporary writer Éric Chevillard, in an attempt to identify the specific manifestations of revolt in his texts. It is argued that an extensive sense of refusal pervades over all of his works and takes on a programmatic character. This author rebels against all the imposed limits, the statu quo, all which is taken for granted and seems to be unquestionable. One of his preferred targets are literary prizes and literary critics, for their role in determining what is or is not considered quality literature and in attributing labels to literary works which predetermine their reception. Chevillard’s criticism also goes to literary genres, with a particular emphasis on the novel, for all the conventions which limit the possibilities offered to the writer. Finally it is shown how humor is used as a powerful tool in undermining certitudes and contradicting the readers’ expectations.
- 14, de Jean Echenoz, un récit de guerre à l’épreuve du pathosPublication . Faria, Dominique14 is a recently published novel by a French contemporary writer, Jean Echenoz. Having the First World War as its core subject, the text covers the main traditional themes of war novels. Its interest, however, does not lie in what it says about the war, but rather in how the war is told. In fact, 14 points out the main horrors of the war, without engaging in pathos. In order to do so, Echenoz resorts to two groups of techniques, whose main purpose is to lighten the dramatic effect of the war scenes depicted. Surprisingly, the result is a text which recounts the crude horrors of war.
- Noms humoristiques de personnages et traditions traductives nationalesPublication . Faria, DominiqueOn s’arrêtera sur la traduction d’un cas spécifique d’humour linguistique, celui produit par les noms des personnages. Le propos n’est pourtant pas de discuter les aspects strictement linguistiques de la traduction. On travaillera sur un corpus composé par deux romans anglais, publiés à la fin du vingtième siècle, traduits en Français, Portugais Européen, Portugais du Brésil et Espagnol. Le choix de ces langues cible, issues du latin et possédant par conséquent des ressources linguistiques similaires, permettra de mieux signaler les différentes approches à la traduction dans chaque pays.
- Barthes sémiologue et écrivain traduit au Portugal (1973-2015)Publication . Faria, Dominique; Domingues, João da CostaLe propos de cet article est de rendre compte de la réception de Roland Barthes au Portugal, entre 1973 – date de la première traduction de l’un de ses textes – et 2015. Une analyse des traductions de ses ouvrages et de leur parution à des moments charnière de la culture portugaise d’une part, et l’étude des textes critiques portant sur son œuvre de l’autre, nous permettront de dégager l’image que l’on a reçue, mais aussi celle que l’on a construite, de Roland Barthes au Portugal. Cette étude vise à montrer comment ses écrits et sa pensée furent perçus, comment il fut (re)présenté par traducteurs, éditeurs, critiques et enseignants au public portugais, plus nombreux et plus divers qu’on ne saurait le croire.
- La traduction comme déracinement et exilPublication . Faria, DominiqueL’exil fonctionne comme une métaphore qui permet de mieux saisir les enjeux majeurs qui soutiennent et la traduction et la réflexion théorique et critique qui la prend pour objet. Une approche de la traduction portugaise du roman de Romain Gary, entendue comme texte en exil sert dans cet article à illustrer nos propos.
