Abstract(s)

This article studies the work of French contemporary writer Éric Chevillard, in an attempt to identify the specific manifestations of revolt in his texts. It is argued that an extensive sense of refusal pervades over all of his works and takes on a programmatic character. This author rebels against all the imposed limits, the statu quo, all which is taken for granted and seems to be unquestionable. One of his preferred targets are literary prizes and literary critics, for their role in determining what is or is not considered quality literature and in attributing labels to literary works which predetermine their reception. Chevillard’s criticism also goes to literary genres, with a particular emphasis on the novel, for all the conventions which limit the possibilities offered to the writer. Finally it is shown how humor is used as a powerful tool in undermining certitudes and contradicting the readers’ expectations.
