- Customer mobility in the Portuguese financial systemPublication . Teixeira, João; Silva, Francisco; Costa, Filipe J. C.This paper investigates the level of customer mobility in the Portuguese financial system based on new survey data. We find that customers deal, on average, with more than one bank, and own several financial products. The results show that 46.9 per cent of customers had never switched bank in the past and 92.4 per cent have no intention to switch in the next 24 months. We find that customer mobility is influenced by factors related with their social and economic condition and their level of financial activity. These same factors have an impact on the choice of the reasons for not switching bank in the future. Finally, we observe that these reasons have not only a financial nature but also a psychological nature, revealing the existence of important switching costs in the Portuguese financial system.
- Tourist destination image and consumer behaviour : the case of the AzoresPublication . Melo, Helena Maria Pascoal; Moniz, Ana Isabel Arruda; Silva, FranciscoNowadays places seek to become more distinctive in an increasingly competitive market and the image is a decisive element in the selection of a tourist destination. This research aims to understand the overall image of the Azores as a tourist destination from major source markets, and also aims to ascertain the level of satisfaction and future expectations of these markets concerning the region. The literature review addresses the definition of tourist destination image and the issue of satisfaction since these influences the intention to return and / or intention to recommend the tourist destination. The results indicate that: (1) the overall image influence satisfaction and intention to recommend and/or return to the tourist destination; (2) satisfaction influence the intention to recommend and/or return to the tourist destination. We also verified that most of the tourists are very satisfied with the destination in study, as well as a very positive overall image about the Azores.
- A regret model applied to the maximum capture location problemPublication . Nunes, Pedro Portugal de Sousa; Silva, Francisco; Lourenço, Helena RamalhinhoThis article addresses issues related to location and allocation problems. Herein, we intend to demonstrate the influence of congestion, through the random number generation, of such systems in final solutions. An algorithm is presented which, in addition to the GRASP, incorporates the Regret with the pminmax method to evaluate the heuristic solution obtained with regard to its robustness for different scenarios. Taking as our point of departure the Maximum Capture Location Problem proposed by Church and Revelle [1, 26], an alternative perspective is added in which the choice behavior of the server does not depend only on the elapsed time from the demand point looking to the center, but includes also the service waiting time.
- Azores tourism product perceptions : the Influence of the country of originPublication . Batista, Maria da Graça Câmara; Silva, Francisco; Martins, AlexandraThis study focused on the Autonomous Region of the Azores (ARA), which has some features that are considered favorable to the development of tourism and to the interest in the tourism product. However, the region’s geographical dispersion, its high dependence on transportation and the seasonality of the industry constrain its development. The present research aimed to assess tourists’ perception of certain costs (living, accommodation, plane ticket, and transportation to/from the airport), and whether these differ between tourists of different nationalities. The findings show that tourists, both residents and non-residents, have the perception that the cost of living and of the plane ticket are high, while the cost of accommodation and of transportation to the airport is considered normal by most respondents. We concluded that the models differ when applied to residents and non-residents. For non-residents, living in certain countries induces them to express differences in the perception of the costs studied, when compared to individuals that live in other countries.
- Banks’ capital, regulation and the financial crisisPublication . Teixeira, João; Silva, Francisco; Fernandes, Ana V.; Alves, Ana Carolina GomesThis paper investigates whether regulatory capital requirements play an important role in determining banks’ equity capital. We estimate equity capital regressions using panel data of a sample of 560 banks for 2004-2010. Our results suggest that regulatory capital requirements are not first order determinants of banks’ capital structure. We document differences on the effect of most factors on banks’ share of equity according to the type of bank and to the region of the bank. Finally, we show that the determinants of this share are sensitive to the recent international financial crisis and to a set of regulatory country factors.
- A regret model applied to the maximum coverage location problem with queue disciplinePublication . Nunes, Pedro Portugal de Sousa; Silva, Francisco; Lourenço, Helena RamalhinhoThis article discusses issues related to the location and allocation problems where is intended to demonstrate, through the random number generation, the influence of congestion of such systems in the final solutions. It is presented an algorithm that, in addition to the GRASP, incorporates the Regret with the pminmax method to evaluate the heuristic solution obtained in regard to its robustness for different scenarios. To the well know Maximum Coverage Location Problem from Church and Revelle [1] an alternative perspective is added in which the choice behavior of the server does not only depend on the elapsed time from the demand point looking to the center, but also includes the waiting time for service conditioned by a waiting queue.
- A regret model applied to the facility location problem with limited capacity facilitiesPublication . Taking as our point of departure the Facility Location Problem proposed by Balinski [27], an alternative perspective is added associating regret values to particular solutions.
- A joint replenishment competitive location problemPublication . Silva, Francisco; Lourenço, Helena Ramalhinho; Nunes, Pedro Portugal de SousaCompetitive Location Models seek the positions which maximize the market captured by an entrant firm from previously positioned competitors. Nevertheless, strategic location decisions may have a significant impact on inventory and shipment costs in the future affecting the firm’s competitive advantages. In this work we describe a model for the joint replenishment competitive location problem which considers both market capture and replenishment costs in order to choose the firm’s locations. We also present an metaherusitic method to solve it based on the Viswanathan’s (1996) algorithm to solve the Replenishment Problem and an Iterative Local Search Procedure to solve the Location Problem.
