  • Factors influencing integration into higher education and satisfaction with academic life in context of Bullying and Hazing practices
Publication . Silva, Osvaldo Dias Lopes da; Caldeira, Suzana Nunes; Sousa, Áurea
ABSTRACT: Entering higher education (HE) represents a significant milestone for many students, shaping their choices and future aspirations. Unfortunately, bullying and hazing are common during this transition, often linked to traditional initiation practices. Understanding the impact of these negative experiences on students' integration, satisfaction with academic life, and academic performance is crucial for educational institutions to develop effective strategies for a supportive and welcoming environment. In continuation of previous research on student integration in higher education, a study was conducted with a sample of 574 students who enrolled in higher education in Portugal during the 2023-2024 academic year. The primary aim was to identify the most influential factors related to bullying during hazing and to examine their effects on students' satisfaction with academic life, academic integration, and performance. Additionally, the study sought to determine whether satisfaction with academic life mediates the relationship between bullying experiences and academic integration. ....[...]....After ensuring all requirements for the reflective model were met (internal consistency reliability, convergent and discriminant validity), the structural model was evaluated to test the hypotheses. Significant findings included: positive and negative relationships with hazing practices are the most influential factors identified by the ASBSHHE; bullying situations during hazing significantly affect both academic integration and student life satisfaction; and satisfaction with student life mediates the relationship between bullying during hazing and academic integration. These results highlight the importance of addressing bullying and hazing in higher education. Educational institutions can use these insights to develop interventions aimed at preventing abusive behaviours and promoting better integration and satisfaction among new students, ultimately enhancing their academic success and well-being.
  • University students’ perceptions of ChatGPT: Factors that affect their behavioural intention, usage and utility perceived
Publication . Silva, Osvaldo Dias Lopes da; Nunes, Jerónimo; Sousa, Áurea
ABSTRACT: ChatGPT is one of many generative artificial intelligence (AI) tools with the potential to transform education, notably by improving student engagement and making learning more personalized and interactive. However, there are concerns in the educational community about some of its disadvantages, such as its potential to be used for plagiarism and to undermine students' ability to think independently. All potential benefits and disadvantages of using ChatGPT throughout the educational community and especially among higher education students must be properly investigated so that the most appropriate measures can be taken for use. Given that young people have a strong appetite for technology innovations, it is in everyone's interest that higher education institutions and all their interlocutors implement recommendations for best practices in the use of ChatGPT. In this sense, it is essential that the main determining factors that affect behavioural intentions in relation to ChatGPT and its use are evaluated based on the perceptions of higher education students. Based on a model adapted from the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT1 and UTAUT2), the factors [Performance expectancy (PE), Effort Expectancy (EE), Social Influence (SI), Facilitating Conditions (FC)] that lead university students to ChatGPT 4.0 (free version) behavioural intention (BI) and use (GPTU) were examined. ....[...].... The data were analyzed through Partial Least Square Structural Equation Modelling (PLS-SEM), and all requirements regarding reliability and validity (convergent and discriminant) were duly fulfilled for all constructs present in the model under exploration. Most hypotheses are confirmed by the significant results, being the most preponderant factors of behavioural intention (BI) to use ChatGPT in learning social influence (SI) and facilitating conditions (FC). The use of ChatGPT (GPTU) has significant impacts on perception ease to use (PEU) and perceived utility (PU). Perceived trust reveals a moderating role in the relationship between the constructs (PE, SI, FC] and behavioural intention (BI). The results obtained could help provide policymakers in Higher Education with information on the determining factors in developing effective and efficient policies to improve the use of ChatGPT in higher education in Portugal.
  • Impacts of young people’s behavior on the use of information and communication technologies
Publication . Silva, Osvaldo Dias Lopes da; Sousa, Áurea; Nunes, Jerónimo
ABSTRACT: The rapid development and constant change in the use of information and communication technologies (ICT) offers young people immense opportunities, but also presents many risks. Although there are many studies that have analyzed the positive and negative effects of ICT on the development of young people, it appears that little is known about the various factors that are linked to its use, such as the behavioral and motivational characteristics of young people (Areepattamannil and Khine, 2017). One of the purposes of this study is to find out if there is a typology associated with a set of items that assess the perceptions of young people, aged between 15 and 25 years, about the use of ICT. On the other hand, it is also intended to assess the impacts of their behaviors on the use of ICT in the post pandemic period due to Covid-19, based on the emotional and behavioral dimensions associated with assertiveness.....[...].... technologies and the interpersonal behavior scale (IBS), developed by Arrindell et al. (2002). The data were analyzed using various statistical methods, among which the Categorical Principal Component Analysis (CATPCA) and the Partial Least Squares - Structural Equation Modeling (PLS SEM). Based on the CATPCA, three main components were extracted, referring, respectively, to skills in using a mobile device (C1), using e-mail and social networks (C2) and using ICT for entertainment purposes (C3). It was verified, based on the formulated research hypotheses, that the behavioral dimension and the emotional dimension, associated with the assertive behavior of young people, have significant impacts on the use of ICT. It should also be noted, using multigroup analysis, that there are statistically significant differences between the two genders only in terms of assessing the impact of the behavioral dimension regarding skills in the use of mobile devices. In summary, it was found the existence of significant positive impacts of the two dimensions associated with assertiveness, namely the behavioral and emotional aspects of young people, in the use of ICT.
  • The mediating effect of attitudes towards statistics and technology in university students
Publication . Silva, Osvaldo Dias Lopes da; Sousa, Áurea
ABSTRACT: University students, especially those who study Social Sciences and Humanities, tend to express their fear at the beginning of classes in curricular units in Statistics, foreseeing possible difficulties in their learning. To evaluate and monitor the performance of students in Statistics course units, it is of utmost relevance that teachers and researchers consider some non-cognitive factors related to the students, such as the anxiety revealed in evaluation periods and the attitudes that students have in relation to Statistics and the use of Technology in these curricular units. In a post-pandemic period, the objective of this study is to investigate the interrelationships between some constructs and the potential mediating effect of attitudes towards Statistics and Technology on the relationship between anxiety and students' performance in these curricular units. The data was obtained through the questionnaire containing variables of sample characterization, seven items concerned the Anxiety dimension of the Depression Anxiety Stress Scale (Lovibond & Lovibond, 1995), 28 items of the Students’ Attitudes toward Statistics and Technology Scale (Anastasiadou, 2011) and, also, the variable referring to the performance of students in Statistics, operationalized based on the classifications obtained within the scope of the respective curricular unit in the area of Statistics. Higher scores in the Anxiety dimension correspond to higher levels of student anxiety. Students’ Attitudes Toward Statistics and Technology Scale allows identifying the positive/negative attitudes associated with lived experiences in the context of learning Statistics with the use of Technology. ....[...].... In terms of data analysis procedures, a descriptive analysis, and the evaluation of the internal consistency of the items of the instruments used were carried out, based on Cronbach's Alpha coefficient. To test the mediation hypothesis, the Process macro (Hayes, 2021) was used, with the decision on the significance of the indirect effect based on the bootstrap estimation. The potential mediating effect of attitudes towards Statistics and Technology on the relationship between anxiety and performance was verified, that is, the indirect effect was statistically significant. It was also found that: anxiety was negatively associated with attitudes towards Statistics and Technology; attitudes towards Statistics and Technology were positively associated with performance; and anxiety was negatively associated with performance (significant direct effects).
  • Perception of Teachers and Students about Teaching and Learning in the period of Covid-19 pandemic
Publication . Silva, Osvaldo Dias Lopes da; Sousa, Áurea
In the current period of Covid-19 pandemic crisis, there were very unexpected changes in the society, in general, and in the education system, in particular, with the quick change to distance learning and teaching. This situation took the educational community by surprise and, in particular, its main protagonists (students and teachers). The digital revolution poses new challenges, but it also provides renewed learning opportunities that make it possible to face the current situation. However, there are still social inequalities in access to computer equipment and internet. This empirical study aims to investigate how teachers evaluated their performance in the context of distance learning and teaching, due to the current pandemic situation, in terms of pedagogical resources and instruments, teaching strategies and assessment of learning, as well as the students' perceptions about those topics....[…].... Data, collected by questionnaire, were analyzed using Descriptive Statistics and Inferential Statistics (namely, the hypothesis test for the difference between two proportions). It was found that, in general, teachers expressed the most favorable opinions toward distance learning and teaching, comparatively to the students. On the other hand, students expressed a greater diversity of opinions, when compared to the teachers. The most dissonant opinions between the two parties were those referring to the items “Diversification of the resources used”, “Diversification of the activities carried out”, “Incentive to participate in activities and projects that contribute to learning” and “Carrying out activities involving other disciplines”. The most similar opinions between students and teachers are related to the items “opportunities to participate in class activities” and “explanation of the evaluation criteria”.
  • Effects of LifeI Satisfaction on Students' Attitudes Towards Statistics and Technology and their Interrelationships
Publication . Silva, Osvaldo Dias Lopes da; Sousa, Áurea
In a society in which technology and changes are increasingly fast, the role of Statistics has become increasingly important. The students' attitudes towards Statistics, according to the literature review, are very interrelated with the affective and cognitive components and with the value attributed to this discipline in terms of its importance and usefulness in their personal and professional life. The psychological well-being of students, in addition to all other related components, as well as their attitudes towards Statistics and Technology, can affect their involvement and learning of contents in the scope of this discipline. The present research, through a questionnaire, aims to better understand the attitudes that students have towards Statistics and Technology and what are the factors that can affect their learning....[...].... The participants in this study were students from Portuguese Universities who had already attended Statistics courses during the 1st cycle of higher education. A structural equation model analysis, performed using PLS, revealed a statistically significant relationship between satisfaction with life and the five subscales of Students Attitudes toward Statistics and Technology Scale. In the model used, almost all the interrelationships between the factors of attitudes of students were statistically significant at level 0.01, suggesting that the use of technology affects the students' attitudes regarding the components "Affect" (emotions concerning statistics) and "Value" (usefulness of statistics in students' personal and professional life).
  • Perceção de Saúde, Atividades Preferidas e Satisfação com a Vida em Turistas Seniores no Destino Açores
Publication .
