Abstract(s)
ABSTRACT: The literature on the prognosis of children with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) for family functioning is relatively distinct. Some studies show the existence of a positive correlation between the severity of symptoms in children with ASD and the parents´ suffering. Others point to positive effects in the family shpere, resulting from the diagnosis of ASD, such as increased resilience and family cohesion. This study, carried out in the Autonomous Region of the Azores, seeks to clarify the impact of the diagnosis of ASD on family functioning, aiming to study the perceptions of parents of children with ASD in regard to their well-being. The study included fathers/mothers of 121 children, aged between 3 and 11 years. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews, and analysed using some methods of exploratory analysis, in order to look for statistically significant associations. the results reflect the perceptions of caregivers of children who have a mostly mild or moderate degree of ASD, with a minority of children showing a severe degree of incidence. It was found that the most affected area in families of children with mildly severe ASD was family and social well-being, with changes in the time allocated to work functions. Families of children with a more severe degree of ASD reported changes in family and social well-being, with manifestations in the labour and socialization spheres.
