- About hazing In higher educationPublication . Bauer, Raposo Benjamin Yvo; Nunes, Caldeira Suzana; Martins, Maria J.; Mendes, Maria; Botelho, Susana P.; Silva, OsvaldoNot a year goes by that we don't hear of another hazing scandal in a higher education institution. Many researchers took interest in this issue in order to understand its causes and consequences. They provided definitions and lead to prevent it. We found hazing in many social groups around the world, with different names, and under specific forms. This paper aims to better understand hazing and its actors, with a specific focus on hazing in higher education. We presented three definitions to offer several perspectives on hazing, and facilitate its apprehension. Our method was to analyze the relevant scientific literature with the intention of reflecting on its roots and representation among individuals. Results are an exposition of motivations from hazing's actors, recommendations about how to define it and how to prevent derivations. Our main conclusions assume hazing is usually depicted as a deviant behavior, but it would appear to be a norm. Also, its core purpose would be the progression from newcomer to a group member. A lack of structure or meaning could lead to its misuse and facilitate outrageous events. In higher education, hazing seems to be used as a tool to integrate freshmen in their new institutional world. Scandals including violence, sexual and alcohol abuse could be a symptom of something deeper from hazing's environment.
- Analyzing Pilot Projects of Creative Tourism in an Ultra-Peripheral Region : Which guidelines can be extracted for sustainable regional development?Publication . Santos, Carlos; Couto, Gualter; Albergaria, Isabel Soares de; Silva, Leonor Sampaio da; Medeiros, Pilar Damião; Simas, Rosa Neves; Castanho, Rui AlexandreSeveral authors have shown that some tourism typologies - i.e., rural tourism, nature-based tourism, or creative tourism - have a more predominant role in attaining regional sustainability. In this regard, this paper explores the impacts of five pilot projects of creative tourism on the sustainable development of the insular Autonomous Region of the Azores. Through direct exploratory tools, such as interviews and site analyses, the present study enabled us to provide greater insight into creative tourism projects and their relevance to the development of an ultra-peripheral island region. As part of the CREATOUR AZORES Project, this study is based on five creative tourism pilot projects operating in the Azores, Portugal. As such, it is recommended that the regional government, local authorities, and other relevant actors and players in this region actively support and create strategies to strengthen these projects (and similar initiatives) once they not only contribute to regional development and destination promotion but also promote much-desired sustainable development - once these kinds of tourism, in theory, and practice, counteract the dire effects of mass tourism.
- Autonomy in leadership : a case study of the founder's role in establishing an organizationPublication . Serpa, Sandro Nuno FerreiraThe extent of a leader’s autonomy in establishing organizational culture is a complex issue in organizational studies. The present research analyzed the actions of the founding leader of Asilo de Infância Desvalida da Horta from 1858 to 1879 to determine the extent of his autonomy during his administration using documents in organization archives, local newspaper articles of the period and papers on this topic. The results revealed that the leader’s actions did not occur in isolation but were influenced by the sociohistorical environment. Establishing legitimacy as a leader was a complex, multidimensional process that required consideration of the social, legal, regulatory, political and religious aspects of his actions. Although the current research is a case study, the findings suggest that autonomy based on legitimacy is a key element contributing to founder success.
- Boaventura Sousa Santos : between academia and social activismPublication . Medeiros, Pilar DamiãoThis paper intends to explore the social and political engagement of a Portuguese public intellectual, Boaventura Sousa Santos. Along with his academic work and social activism, the sociologist assumes the need to invigorate the European civitas throughout the emergence of privileged players that should be forging new synergies, alternative social movements and inspiring new forms of reflection and demands. It will also be brought to discussion how the resurgence of critical intervention and political engagement of civic-minded intellectuals, like Boaventura Sousa Santos in the public arena has been contributing to a greater vitality and re-politicization of the European public sphere.
- Challenges of schooling : some questions about the role of school from the parental perspectivePublication . Serpa, Sandro Nuno FerreiraAt a time when the legitimacy of School as an educational social universe is under discussion, the present paper seeks to reflect on parents’—especially those from socially deprived contexts—positions on the matter. Based on the results of an empirical study, we conclude that there is a multiplicity of meanings currently ascribed to School, which suggests the need for an active mobilization of educational actors in a participatory and contextualized construction of School that belongs to all and that is meant for all. Such a construction would better respond to the idiosyncratic reality of students and their families through the process of the permanent (re)legitimization of the School’s role in contributing to greater social justice.
- Characterization and Predictors of Paranoid Ideation in YouthsPublication . Sousa, Marina; Carvalho, Célia; da Motta, Carolina; Cabral, Joana Moura; Pereira, Vera Lúcia do Couto; Caldeira, Suzana Nunes; Peixoto, Ermelindo BernardoParanoid ideation is a common thought process that constitutes a defense against perceived social threats. The current study aimed at the characterization of paranoid ideation in youths and to explore the possible predictors involved in the development of paranoid ideations. Paranoid ideation, shame, submission, early childhood memories and current depressive, anxious and stress symptomatology were assessed in a sample of 1516 Portuguese youths. Higher frequencies of paranoid ideation were observed, particularly in females and youths from lower socioeconomic status. The main predictors identified relates to submissive behaviors and adverse childhood experiences, and especially to shame feelings. The current study emphasizes that the predictors are similar to findings in adults and clinical populations, and future implications to research and clinical practice aiming at paranoid ideations are discussed, as well as the pertinence of the study of mediating factors that allow a wider understanding of this thought process in younger populations and the prevention of psychopathology in adulthood.
- Clustering an interval data set : are the main partitions similar to a priori partition?Publication . Sousa, Áurea; Bacelar-Nicolau, Helena; Nicolau, Fernando C.; Silva, OsvaldoIn this paper we compare the best partitions of data units (cities) obtained from different algorithms of Ascendant Hierarchical Cluster Analysis (AHCA) of a well-known data set of the literature on symbolic data analysis (“city temperature interval data set”) with a priori partition of cities given by a panel of human observers. The AHCA was based on the weighted generalised affinity with equal weights, and on the probabilistic coefficient associated with the asymptotic standardized weighted generalized affinity coefficient by the method of Wald and Wolfowitz. These similarity coefficients between elements were combined with three aggregation criteria, one classical, Single Linkage (SL), and the other ones probabilistic, AV1 and AVB, the last ones in the scope of the VL methodology. The evaluation of the partitions in order to find the partitioning that best fits the underlying data was carried out using some validation measures based on the similarity matrices. In general, global satisfactory results have been obtained using our methods, being the best partitions quite close (or even coinciding) with the a priori partition provided by the panel of human observers.
