Neste âmbito, a nossa deslocação à ilha do Pico teve como principal objectivo realizar acções de sensibilização e promoção da melhoria do estado de conservação do meio ambiente. As nossas acções tiveram como público-alvo sobretudo crianças e jovens, e como tal pretendeu-se que as mesmas tivessem lugar na Ecoteca do Pico e nas Escolas Básicas e Secundárias locais.
- Arceuthobium Species (Viscaceae) Parasitizing an Angiosperm: The Unique Case of A. azoricum in the Azores IslandsPublication . Elias, Rui B.; Moura, Mónica; Roxo, Guilherme; Borges Silva, L; Pavão, Diogo C.; Resendes, Roberto; Pereira, Fernando; Nickrent, DanielArceuthobium azoricum Wiens & Hawksw. is a rare Azorean endemic epiphytic hemiparasite (mistletoe), which typically parasitizes branches of the gymnosperm Juniperus brevifolia (Hochst. ex Seub.) Antoine (Cupressaceae), which is also an Azorean endemic. Here, we describe a population of A. azoricum, on Pico Island, parasitizing Erica azorica Hochst. ex Seub. (Ericaceae), which is also an Azorean endemic. Our molecular analysis (using nuclear ribosomal internal transcribed spacer) showed no differences between individuals parasitizing Erica and Juniperus species. Moreover, a preliminary analysis showed no differences in morphological characteristics between accessions sampled from different hosts. Given that this is the first bona fide record of Arceuthobium sp. parasitizing an angiosperm, this population represents a unique host-shifting event, and its conservation is important because it may allow new insights into host recognition mechanisms in mistletoes. Immediate attention should be given to characterizing this Pico Island population using appropriate molecular methods and additional morphological analyses.

This rich biodiversity is under threat from anthropogenic drivers, such as climate change, invasive species, land use changes, overexploitation, or pathogen (re)emergence. The inventory, characterisation, and study of biodiversity at inter- and intra-specific levels using genomics is crucial to promote its preservation and recovery by informing biodiversity conservation policies, management measures, and research. The participation of researchers from Portuguese institutions in the European Reference Genome Atlas (ERGA) initiative and its pilot effort to generate reference genomes for European biodiversity has reinforced the establishment of Biogenome Portugal. This nascent institutional network will connect the national community of researchers in genomics. Here, we describe the Portuguese contribution to ERGA’s pilot effort, which will generate high-quality reference genomes of six species from Portugal that are endemic, iconic, and/or endangered and include plants, insects, and vertebrates (fish, birds, and mammals) from mainland Portugal or the Azores islands. In addition, we outline the objectives of Biogenome Portugal, which aims to (i) promote scientific collaboration, (ii) contribute to advanced training, (iii) stimulate the participation of institutions and researchers based in Portugal in international biodiversity genomics initiatives, and (iv) contribute to the transfer of knowledge to stakeholders and engaging the public to preserve biodiversity. This initiative will strengthen biodiversity genomics research in Portugal and fuel the genomic inventory of Portuguese eukaryotic species. Such efforts will be critical to the conservation of the country’s rich biodiversity and will contribute to ERGA’s goal of generating reference genomes for European species.

- Caracterização e avaliação dos percursos pedestres da ilha de Santa MariaPublication . Ventura, Maria A.; Queiroz, Rose Emília; Resendes, Roberto; Marquet, Nathalie; Melo, José A.Na Expedição Científica à ilha de Santa Maria realizada entre 12 e 19 de Julho de 2009, foram caracterizados e avaliados os 3 trilhos pedestres classificados da ilha: Entre a Serra e o Mar - PRC3 SMA, Santo Espírito e a Maia - PR4 SMA e Pico Alto e Anjos - PR2 SMA. Do levantamento efectuado ressaltaram aspectos importantes, tais como: os trilhos encontram-se no geral bem preservados, ainda que existam situações pontuais de falta de informação e/ou segurança para os visitantes; o património natural e cultural da ilha de Santa Maria é vasto, e tem um elevado potencial para a prática de actividades turísticas relacionadas com a natureza. A baixa densidade populacional da ilha (57,5 habitantes/km ), e a vigilância atenta de associações ecológicas, como os “Amigos dos Açores”, terão decerto um papel importante na preservação e manutenção dos trilhos pedestres. Ainda assim, verificou-se no trilho PR4 SMA alguma deposição de resíduos, sobretudo no troço que desce até à antiga fábrica da baleia, provavelmente da responsabilidade dos locais que aí se deslocam para a prática de pesca desportiva; no trilho PR2 SMA, o Barreiro da Faneca é palco de actividades lúdicas TT potencialmente nefastas para o ambiente local, e é difícil, a partir do último troço do percurso, encontrar a melhor direcção para o lugar dos Anjos.
- Contribution to the knowledge of the Coccinellidae (Insecta: Coleoptera) fauna from the Azores islands.Publication . Soares, António O.; Elias, Rui B.; Resendes, Roberto; Figueiredo, HelenaAn updated list of the Coccinellidae species of the Azores archipelago is presented. New records for S. Miguel: Nephus (Sidis) hiekei; Sta. Maria: Rodolia cardinalis; S. Jorge: Stethorus punctilium, Clitosthetus arcuatus, Scymnus nubilus, N. (Sidis) hiekei; Pico: R. cardinalis; Graciosa: C. arcuatus, S. (Scymnus) interruptus, N. (Sidis) hiekei, Lindorus lophantae and R. cardinalis; Corvo: S. nubilus, N. (Sidis) hiekei and Coccinella undecimpunctata. Regressions of species richness against area of the islands and distance from the nearest mainland were performed. No statistical significant correlation between species richness against area was found but a statistical significant negative correlation between the number of species and the distance from the nearest mainland was obtained. The results are, in part, in accordance with the predictions of MACARTHUR & WILSON’S (1967) equilibrium theory of island biogeography, relating differences in the diversity within Azorean islands with isolation.
- First record of the top invasive plant Leycesteria formosa (Caprifoliacea) in Terceira Island, AzoresPublication . (Caprifoliaceae) is considered as one of the top 100 invasive species in Macaronesia, due to the extensive infestations presently reported for São Miguel Island, where it is invading Pico da Vara/Tronqueira Special Protection Area, and Lagoa do Fogo Nature Reserve (Silva et al. 2008). It is found invading marginal areas like the margin of Cryptomeria japonica stands, but also the native forest and other types of vegetation, not only in sheltered locations (ravines and water courses) but also at highly exposed sites, (i.e. Monte Escuro). Recorded habitats include Calluna scrubland, Laurus forest, Ilex forest, Juniperus forest, pasture margins, water stream banks, ravines, roadsides, Cryptomeria production forest, and Pittosporum exotic woodland. - Marine algal (seaweed) flora of Faial Island, AzoresPublication . Milla-Figueras, David; Neto, Ana I.; Tempera, F.; Moreu, Ignacio; Prestes, Afonso L.; Resendes, Roberto; Neto, Raul; Tittley, Ian; Afonso, PedroA comprehensive checklist of the marine flora from Faial Island, mid-north Atlantic, is still unavailable, despite the numerous works that gathered data around its coasts for over 150 years. This study brings together and harmonises all macroalgae collections and taxonomical records from multiple projects and teams over the last thirty years. The result is a list of taxonomic records and georeferenced species occurrence data that substantially increases our knowledge of the coastal Azorean marine biodiversity while providing key information for future ecological studies and to support local, marine management and conservation. A total of 2283 specimens belonging to 118 taxa of macroalgae are registered here, comprising 61 Rhodophyta, 26 Chlorophyta, 30 Ochrophyta (Phaeophyceae) and one Cyanophyta (Cyanobacteria). From these, 26 taxa are identified only at the genus level and 92 to species level (47 Rhodophyta, 21 Chlorophyta and 24 Ochrophyta). The list comprises 75 native species, 12 records of uncertain origin and five introductions (Caulerpa prolifera (Forsskål) J.V.Lamouroux, Caulerpa webbiana Montagne, Hydroclathrus tilesii (Endlicher) Santiañez & M.J.Wynne, Asparagopsis armata Harvey and Symphyocladia marchantioides (Harvey) Falkenberg). Codium elisabethiae O.C.Schmidt represents the only Macaronesian endemism known on the Island. Twenty-three species are newly recorded to the algal flora of the Island.

A.; Moreu, IgnacioBACKGROUND: As for many other Azorean Islands, the macroalgal flora of Terceira (belonging to the central group of the archipelago) is poorly known, the published information reflecting occasional collections of sporadic visitors to the island. In order to overcome this and contribute to improve the knowledge of Azorean macroalgal flora at both local and regional scales, a thorough investigation was conducted. Both collections and presence data recordings were undertaken at the littoral and sublittoral levels down to approximately 40 m around the island, covering a total area of approximately 49 km2. This paper lists the taxonomic records and provides information on each species’ ecology and occurrence on the Island’s littoral. NEW INFORMATION: A total of 418 specimens (including taxa identified only to genus level) belonging to 147 taxa of macroalgae, comprising 95 Rhodophyta, 33 Chlorophyta and 19 Ochrophyta (Phaeophyceae) are registered. Of these, 113 were identified to species level (73 Rhodophyta, 24 Chlorophyta and 16 Ochrophyta), encompassing 35 new records for the Island (27 Rhodophyta, 6 Chlorophyta and 2 Ochrophyta). Most species are native, including the Macaronesian endemisms Codium elisabethiae O.C.Schmidt, Millerella tinerfensis (Seoane-Camba) S.M.Boo & J.M.Rico and Phyllophora gelidioides P.Crouan & H.Crouan ex Karsakoff. Eight species are introduced and 15 have uncertain origin.
