Abstract(s)
ABSTRACT: This Internship Report describes, analyses and reflects all the work that was developed in the subjects of Pedagogical Internships I and Pedagogical Internship II, that are part of the Master’s degree in Preschool and teaching in Primary School at the University of the Azores. This report intitled Environmental Studies and Citizenship in the construction of an integrated project of the Knowledge, has as it’s purpose the transformation of the activity room and the classroom in ways that enhances significant learning in terms of Science and Social Studies. Given it’s goals and nature, this Internship Report presents a theoretical framework that informs it, in which the concepts of Curricular Integration, Knowledge of the World/Study of the Environment and Personal and Social Training/Citizenship are analyzed and reflected, and their implications educational in the domain of the portuguese curriculum. It describes and reflects the educational practices developed in the context of pedagogical internships, which were based on the promotion of education for integrated and contextualized citizenship. It also presents and discusses the conceptions and representations of kindergarten teachers and primary school teachers regarding the promotion of the integrated educational process in the areas of Environmental Studies and Citizenship. By carrying out this study, we concluded that the teachers who responded to the questionnaire survey and the two cooperating counselors interviewed argue that developing an integrated curricular practice is important to encourage children/students to enjoy learning and make us reflective and critical citizens. We also found that, despite the recognition of the importance of curricular integration in promoting education for active citizenship, most teachers confuse the concept of curricular integration with the concept of interdisciplinarity, which means that, despite having claimed to promote integration curriculum, these teachers only promote an interdisciplinary process of citizenship education. We conclude this Internship Report by recognizing the importance of curricular integration in the construction of contextualized and meaningful knowledge of children/students, as active, critical and responsible citizens, capable of responding to the challenges of the society in which they live.
