Pseudoamblystegium subtile (Hedw.) Vanderp. & Hedenäs. CONTRIBUTORS: R. Gabriel, M. Kubová, C. Sérgio and I. Soares Albergaria. PORTUGAL, AZORES: Terceira Island, Angra do Heroísmo, municipal garden ‘Jardim Duque da Terceira’, 38° 39′ 24.0′′N, 27°13′ 05.99′′W, 31 m a.s.l, on the base of a shrub, in acidic conditions, 7 April 2017, leg. Michaela Kubová s.n. (AZU). A new understanding of the pleurocarpous moss species Pseudoamblystegium subtile was proposed by Vanderpoorten and Hedenäs (2009). The new genus is separated from the other Amblystegiaceae primarily due to its phylogenetic consistency and is characterised by the possession of leaves with a very short nerve, and erect capsules (Vanderpoorten and Hedenäs 2009). • Arthropod diversity in two Historic Gardens in the Azores, Portugal
Publication . Arteaga, Alba; Malumbres-Olarte, Jagoba; Gabriel, Rosalina; Ros-Prieto, A.; Casimiro, Pedro; Fuentes-Sánchez, Ana; Albergaria, Isabel Soares de; Borges, Paulo A. V.
The aim of our study was to characterise and compare the richness and composition of endemic, native (non-endemic) and introduced arthropod assemblages of two Azorean Historic Gardens with contrasting plant species composition. We hypothesised that Faial Botanic Garden would hold higher arthropod diversity and abundance of native and endemic arthropod species due to its larger native plant community. Species were collected using several arthropod standardised techniques between April 2017 and June 2018. We used the alpha diversity metrics (Hill series) and the partitioning of total beta diversity (βtotal) into its replacement (βrepl) and richness (βrich) components, to analyse the adult and total arthropod community. The orders Araneae, Coleoptera and Hemiptera were also studied separately. Our results show that the number of exotic arthropod species exceeds the number of native and/or the endemic species in both gardens, but the arthropod community of Faial Botanic Garden exhibited a higher density of endemic and native species. Despite some minor exceptions, the geographic origins of plant communities largely influenced the arthropod species sampled in each garden. This study improves our knowledge about urban arthropod diversity in the Azores and shows how well-designed urban garden management and planning contribute to the conservation of native and endemic Azorean species.
  • Creative tourism on islands : a review of the literature
Publication . Baixinho, Alexandra; Santos, Carlos; Couto, Gualter; Albergaria, Isabel Soares de; Silva, Leonor Sampaio da; Medeiros, Pilar Damião; Simas, Rosa Neves
In the last two decades, creative tourism has evolved as a burgeoning field, encompassing a wide range of concepts and practices, in di_erent places around the world. From the very beginning, however, creative tourism has aimed to contribute to sustainable development and increased community wellbeing, as an alternative to mass cultural tourism. With this review article, our main objective is to identify and analyze a body of literature that specifically addresses creative tourism in islands, contributing to fill a gap in the knowledge since no reviews with this focus have yet been undertaken. Our aim is to provide a critical overview of creative tourism experiences at island destinations worldwide, addressing the plurality of empirical contexts and methodological approaches found in academic research. This review highlights the key trends in creative tourism, pointing out two distinct approaches: creative tourism in urban contexts, based on creative events, “cultural clusters” or Cultural and Creative Industries (CCIs), versus community-focused small-scale tourism experiences in rural contexts. This paper also provides an opportunity to assess the evolution of sustainable creative tourism approaches in islands.
  • Analyzing Pilot Projects of Creative Tourism in an Ultra-Peripheral Region : Which guidelines can be extracted for sustainable regional development?
Publication . Santos, Carlos; Couto, Gualter; Albergaria, Isabel Soares de; Silva, Leonor Sampaio da; Medeiros, Pilar Damião; Simas, Rosa Neves; Castanho, Rui Alexandre
Several authors have shown that some tourism typologies - i.e., rural tourism, nature-based tourism, or creative tourism - have a more predominant role in attaining regional sustainability. In this regard, this paper explores the impacts of five pilot projects of creative tourism on the sustainable development of the insular Autonomous Region of the Azores. Through direct exploratory tools, such as interviews and site analyses, the present study enabled us to provide greater insight into creative tourism projects and their relevance to the development of an ultra-peripheral island region. As part of the CREATOUR AZORES Project, this study is based on five creative tourism pilot projects operating in the Azores, Portugal. As such, it is recommended that the regional government, local authorities, and other relevant actors and players in this region actively support and create strategies to strengthen these projects (and similar initiatives) once they not only contribute to regional development and destination promotion but also promote much-desired sustainable development - once these kinds of tourism, in theory, and practice, counteract the dire effects of mass tourism.
  • Viagens, Produtos e Consumos Artísticos. O espaço ultramarino português, 1450-1900
Publication .
• Bryophytes of Azorean parks and gardens (I) : «Reserva Florestal de Recreio do Pinhal da Paz» : São Miguel Island
Publication . Polaino-Martin, Clara; Gabriel, Rosalina; Borges, Paulo A. V.; Cruz, Ricardo; Albergaria, Isabel Soares de
Historic urban parks and gardens are increasingly being considered as interesting refuges for a great number of species, including some rare taxa, otherwise almost absent from urban areas, such as many bryophytes and other biota that are not their main focus. After a bibliographic work, the "Reserva Florestal de Recreio do Pinhal da Paz" (RFR-PP), in São Miguel Island (Azores), stood out as one of the least studied areas of the region, without any bryophyte’ references. Thus, the aim of this study was to identify the most striking bryophyte species present along the main visitation track of RFR-PP, in order to increase its biodiversity knowledge. Bryophytes growing on rocks, soil or tree bark were collected adhoc, in 17 sites, ca. 100 m apart from each other. In total, 43 species were identified: 23 mosses, 19 liverworts, and one hornwort, encompassing five classes, 15 orders and 27 families. Seven species are endemic from Europe and three from Macaronesia. No invasive bryophytes were found in the surveyed area. These results update the distribution data of São Miguel Island, show that Azorean parks and gardens contribute to the community dynamics of bryophytes at lower elevation and add a new layer of interest to the visitors of RFR-PP.
  • Sustainable creative tourism on islands and the pandemic: The Creatour Azores project
Publication . Baixinho, Alexandra; Santos, Carlos; Couto, Gualter; Albergaria, Isabel Soares de; Silva, Leonor Sampaio da; Medeiros, Pilar Damião; Simas, Rosa Neves
As the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic was felt worldwide, the tourism sector was forced to seek ways of reinventing itself. Two decades prior to this crisis, in varied rural areas and island contexts, small-scale, community-based creative tourism had appeared as a sustainable place-making solution to foster place vitality, competitive distinctiveness, regenerative development and destination resilience. From an island perspective, this article presents the theoretical framework, methodological approaches, and empirical practices of the Creatour Azores project, which was carried out in the North Atlantic archipelago of the Azores from 2019-2022. Given this timeframe, the investigators and pilot projects that implemented this research-practice project were confronted with the COVID-19 pandemic, which accentuated the isolation and remoteness that tend to characterize islandscapes, especially peripheral islands such as the Azores. At the same time, however, this devastating global pandemic, which impacted the tourism sector especially, ended up offering unexpected opportunities along with special challenges, seeming to underscore the relevance of studies focused on the isolation and remoteness that characterize islandscapes. After describing the project methodologies and practices, as well as the adjustments adopted due to the pandemic, this article considers future possibilities for creative tourism on islands, in general, and in the Azores.
