- Role aesthetics, role sociology and the dialectics of modern interpretationPublication . Medeiros, Pilar DamiãoThe transfer and application of social-psychological and sociological role categories in modern German novels and hermeneutics. Close interdisciplinary relationship between neo-romantic ideas, role theory and German literature from the mid 1960’s till the end of the 1970’s.
- Intellectuals and the quest for a new political culturePublication . Medeiros, Pilar DamiãoThe contemporary “global society” (Habermas) shows evidences of a new historical paradigm with multifarious – economical, social, cultural and political – implications. This paper tries to dissect, throughout different axes of analysis, the contradictions and puzzling aspects inherent to the global techno-economic status quo and the growing instrumental rationality (Horkheimer & Adorno). It also attempts to scrutinize cultural-political alternatives to the current “res publica mundialis”, which has created a hybrid public sphere devoid of critical consciousness and “cultural-political imagery”. In this context, the figure of the intellectual contemplated as a “representative figure” (Saïd) with the “responsibility” to be engaged with the truth and sustain human liberty values, equality and participated democracy. Therefore, as autonomous and “attached/detached” social actors, the intellectuals face the challenge of resisting against commodity culture, to stimulate cultural dialogue between distinctive value clusters in our globalised society (Benhabib) and to alert the public and political spheres for the significance of a new “civilization leap” (Naïr, Morin). In a sense, this paper stresses the compromise of the intellectuals to think about new forms and the reforms of political culture and to promote a framework for political change concerning the crucial role of culture in the quest of a more pluralistic, but not hybrid and fragmented, “glocalized” democracy.
- Challenges of schooling : some questions about the role of school from the parental perspectivePublication . Serpa, Sandro Nuno FerreiraAt a time when the legitimacy of School as an educational social universe is under discussion, the present paper seeks to reflect on parents’—especially those from socially deprived contexts—positions on the matter. Based on the results of an empirical study, we conclude that there is a multiplicity of meanings currently ascribed to School, which suggests the need for an active mobilization of educational actors in a participatory and contextualized construction of School that belongs to all and that is meant for all. Such a construction would better respond to the idiosyncratic reality of students and their families through the process of the permanent (re)legitimization of the School’s role in contributing to greater social justice.
- Boaventura Sousa Santos : between academia and social activismPublication . Medeiros, Pilar DamiãoThis paper intends to explore the social and political engagement of a Portuguese public intellectual, Boaventura Sousa Santos. Along with his academic work and social activism, the sociologist assumes the need to invigorate the European civitas throughout the emergence of privileged players that should be forging new synergies, alternative social movements and inspiring new forms of reflection and demands. It will also be brought to discussion how the resurgence of critical intervention and political engagement of civic-minded intellectuals, like Boaventura Sousa Santos in the public arena has been contributing to a greater vitality and re-politicization of the European public sphere.
- Schooling and professional trajectories of young people : a view from the European PeripheryPublication . Palos, Ana Cristina Pires; Diogo, Fernando; Silva, OsvaldoIn this article we discuss the role of school diplomas in the transition of young people to adulthood. To analyze this role we pay special attention to the professional trajectories of young people in contemporary societies. The empirical analysis was carried out in a Portuguese region particularly suited to this analysis thanks to the great dichotomy between young people with excellent education levels and youngsters that feature low education levels and are early school leavers. The findings demonstrate the existence of four profiles that reflect the diversity of professional paths of young people, different kinds of dominant schooling pathways in each one, the mainstreaming of job insecurity in all profiles, and finally the emergence of new forms of transition between unemployment and employment.
- The non-sharing of organizational culture : a case study examining the management perspectivePublication . Serpa, Sandro Nuno FerreiraThe degree to which cultural elements are shared by members of an organization is a commonly discussed topic in organizational culture. This research contributes to that discussion by analyzing elements that shape the concrete situations of cultural non-sharing or even conflict, diachronically examining a social and educational organization. A case study of a shelter organization for unprotected children and young female boarders was conducted by examining the organization’s archival documents to discern the perspective of its boards of directors over time. The results demonstrate that the sharing of culture in this organization is not absolute: situations include formal rather than real sharing as well as disagreement, which is understandable considering the functional autonomy of employees and the relationships of the organization with the exterior (both with the State and with the surrounding community). Although the boards of directors sought to control these countercultural elements by establishing a dominant culture, their actions were conditioned by internal and external factors, both intentional and contingent. Thus, one implication of this qualitative research is that successful organizational leaders must be aware that they operate in complex and somewhat unpredictable contexts that influence the management of organizational culture.
- Autonomy in leadership : a case study of the founder's role in establishing an organizationPublication . Serpa, Sandro Nuno FerreiraThe extent of a leader’s autonomy in establishing organizational culture is a complex issue in organizational studies. The present research analyzed the actions of the founding leader of Asilo de Infância Desvalida da Horta from 1858 to 1879 to determine the extent of his autonomy during his administration using documents in organization archives, local newspaper articles of the period and papers on this topic. The results revealed that the leader’s actions did not occur in isolation but were influenced by the sociohistorical environment. Establishing legitimacy as a leader was a complex, multidimensional process that required consideration of the social, legal, regulatory, political and religious aspects of his actions. Although the current research is a case study, the findings suggest that autonomy based on legitimacy is a key element contributing to founder success.
- The qualitative systemic analysis in the context of qualitative research methodsPublication . Lalanda-Gonçalves, RolandoAlex Mucchielli in the University of Montpellier developed the qualitative systemic analysis. In this communication, we intend to present the principles of this methodological approach in human and social sciences. We believe that this qualitative approach is innovative in the context of qualitative methods and allows a new perspective in the analysis of the communication processes in social organizations. The main operations of the systemic qualitative method are the iterative definition of the framework, the identification of the recurrences and circular causalities, and the modelling of relations/social exchanges. These operations aim to find the sense/meaning of a social exchange system. The logic of the system, found by an approach that respects all the validation process in the qualitative methods, is important to clarify the specificity of the research in human and social sciences. In fact, qualitative research is one of the scientific achievements that are most relevant in the comprehension of the dynamics of human interaction.
- The role of European intellectuals in the public spherePublication . Medeiros, Pilar DamiãoThis paper tries to understand – throughout a comparative social, historical and political analysis – if there is any continuity in the modus operandi of intellectuals in contemporary public arena. Thus, the main purpose of this paper is to identify, if the European public intellectual of the 21st century has recovered his/her active role and legitimacy in the public domain such as the one he/she already experienced in the mid-sixties and seventies. Having in mind the contradictory discourses around the role and representation of the intellectual, it seems, nevertheless, crucial to keep hold of E. Said’s argument about intellectuals as “representative figures” (E. Saïd, 1993), who through responsible action, creativity, courage (B. Misztal, 2007) and an “avantgardistic instinct for relevance’s” (Habermas, 2009) should be endorsed with the values of a free and deliberative democracy. In a nutshell, this paper enables us to understand that the resurgence of critical intervention and political engagement of civic-minded intellectuals in the public arena has been contributing to a greater vitality and re-politicization of European public sphere.
- A sociological approach to institutional communication : the public image in organizational administration in educationPublication . Serpa, Sandro Nuno FerreiraAcknowledging that the external context visibly affects any organization, this investigation seeks to constitute a specific contribution to the study of the importance of public image in organizational administration. To that end, a collection and documentary analysis of news stories from the newspaper O Fayalense on the Asylum for the Disadvantaged Children of Horta [Asilo de Infância Desvalida da Horta], an institution located on Faial Island, Azores, Portugal, covering the time period of 1858 to 1895, is performed. In the presentation and discussion of the results, a comparison is made between two periods that involve a single president because they vary in the type of news stories published (at the level of sources and subjects). It is concluded that the news stories published cover three large types of references, which, given the period in question, vary substantially: factual information (on the celebrations occurring in the asylum, communications about donations received and appreciation of benefactors, or institutional information on the elections of the asylum directorate), praise (regarding the asylum’s mission, operation, or administration), and censures (including responses to external criticism, criticism of previous managements, and stories regarding the asylum’s precarious circumstances). The implication of the study is that the importance of a positive public image, especially a positive image that is supportive of the leadership, should not be overlooked for the organizational administration to have greater chances of success.
