Abstract(s)
ABSTRACT: The present report is the result of a reflective analysis of the practices developed throughout the curricular units of Pedagogical Internship I and II. Both curricular units are integrated in the Master’s Degree in Preschool Education and Elementary Education, under the responsibility of the Education Department of the School of Social Sciences & Humanities of the University of the Azores. The subject of choice for the work developed was Promoting Active and Responsible Citizenship in Pre-school Education and in Elementary Education (1st Cycle). Thus, the purpose is to understand how citizenship is approached and discussed in school context, as well as to comprehend its importance in the personal and social development of the child/student and how it contributes to their growth as responsible, autonomous and sympathetic people, who know and exercise their rights and duties in dialogue with others. The aim of the activities carried out was to prompt the (re)construction of active and responsible citizenship among children/students, so that they demonstrate proactive and responsible behaviours towards the Environment, displaying cooperation and solidarity actions towards their colleagues and society as well as autonomy and responsibility towards the adoption of healthy lifestyles, while being responsible for the accomplishment of their activities/works. Therefore, the report comprehends a theoretical first part in which the correlation between education and citizenship is discussed and the teacher’s role in promoting education for an active citizenship is reflected upon. The second part comprises the characterization of the contexts in which Pedagogical Internship I and II took place. Subsequently, the reflective explanation of the activities implemented with emphasis on those that focused on the promotion of an active and responsible citizenship is presented, as well as the research component developed to understand teachers’ conceptions about citizenship and how they approach it. Finally, a general reflection about the educational and investigative work developed in the context of the Pedagogical Internships I and II is presented, focusing on the subject of the present report.
