Abstract(s)
As companhias aéreas, pela sua influência na mobilização de recursos e pessoas, são passíveis de gerar impactos a vários níveis na economia. As companhias de baixo custo, em particular, geraram uma nova procura de tráfego aéreo, aumentaram a frequência das viagens e potenciaram novos destinos turísticos. Assim, atendendo ao atual paradigma e à importância das companhias aéreas, esta tese visa analisar os determinantes da escolha do tipo de companhia de transporte aéreo por parte dos visitantes dos Açores e o efeito da entrada destas companhias no espaço aéreo dos Açores nos determinantes do perfil de gastos, no número de dormidas e na escolha da tipologia de alojamento. Para o efeito, foram utilizados diferentes métodos de análise estatística que serviram de base para o estudo empírico. Os resultados revelam, em primeiro lugar, que as características socioeconómicas como idade e a nacionalidade são determinantes da escolha do tipo de companhia aérea, por parte dos viajantes. Ao considerar a escolha do viajante em função de três tipos de voo, os resultados indicam que a entrada de companhias aéreas de baixo custo (CBC) gera um aumento e diversificação do tipo de viajantes. Em segundo lugar, foram encontradas evidências que os determinantes das despesas dos turistas variam em função da entrada de CBC, o que permite, desde logo, concluir que estas companhias potenciam um novo perfil de turista. Em terceiro lugar, os resultados comprovam que os turistas que viajam para os Açores em CBC tendem a permanecer menos dias no destino, e que estes podem deter outras características que os predispõem a estadias mais curtas. Por último, os resultados sugerem que as características relacionadas com a viagem são variáveis determinantes na escolha do tipo de alojamento.
ABSTRACT: Airlines, by their influence in the mobilization of resources and people, are capable of generating impacts at various levels in the economy. Low-cost carriers in particular have generated a new demand for air traffic, attracted new air transportation passengers, increased travel frequency and boosted new tourist destinations. Thus, considering the current paradigm and the importance of airlines carriers, this study aims to analyze the determinants of the choice of the type of airline by the visitors of the Azores and the effect of the entrance of these companies on the airspace of Azores on determinants of the expenses profile, number of overnight stays and in the choice of the type of accommodation. With this purpose, different methods of statistical analysis were used as the basis for the empirical study. The results show, first of all, that socio-economic characteristics such as age and nationality are decisive for travelers' choice of airline. When considering the choice of the traveler between three types of flights, the results indicate that the entry of low-cost carriers (LCC) generates an increase and diversification of the type of travelers. Secondly, evidence has been found that the determinants of tourists' expenses profile vary according to the arrival of LCC, which makes it possible to conclude from the outset that these companies promote a new tourist profile. Thirdly, the results show that tourists traveling to the Azores on LCC tend to stay fewer days at destination, and that these may hold other characteristics that predispose them to shorter stays. Finally, the results suggest that the characteristics related to travel are explanatory variables in the choice of accommodation type.
