dc.description.abstract	A presença de vulcanismo ativo no arquipélago dos Açores, mais propriamente na ilha de São Miguel, associada com as características climáticas das ilhas, explica a existência de uma intensa atividade hidrotermal, manifestada através de fumarolas e vários tipos de águas minerais, gasocarbónicas e termais. Algumas destas águas foram desde cedo utilizadas com finalidade medicinal. Esta dissertação tem por objetivo caraterizar a história do termalismo na Europa e em Portugal, e caracterizar a formação geológica, justificando a ocorrência de fenómenos vulcânicos nas zonas em estudo, para compreendermos mais facilmente a evolução histórica, social, arquitetónica e patrimonial das estâncias termais das zonas de estudo da ilha de São Miguel; por fim, analisar as potencialidades atuais das estâncias termais no âmbito do turismo de saúde e lazer. A mais relevante estância termal, situa-se no vale das Furnas, e é onde está centrada grande parte da história termal da ilha de São Miguel. É no Vale das Furnas que se encontram vários espaços com finalidades termais como por exemplo os Banhos Novos (atual Boutique Hotel Spa), a Poça da Dona Beija, a Poça da Silvina (ou lava-pés) e o tanque termal do Parque Terra Nostra. Por fim, na Ribeira Grande há um edifício datado do início do Século XIX conhecido como “Banhos da Coroa”; e na Ladeira da Velha, existem umas ruínas de umas pequenas termas da primeira metade do século XX, onde também existiu uma fábrica de engarrafamento de água mineral de que há registos fotográficos da década de 1950. No vulcão das Sete Cidades, existe a estância termal da Ferraria, recentemente modificada aproveitando as instalações ali existentes.	pt_PT
dc.description.abstract	ABSTRACT: The presence of active volcanism in the Azores archipelago, more precisely in the island of São Miguel, associated with the climatic characteristics of the islands, explains the existence of intense hydrothermal activity, manifested through fumaroles and various types of mineral, gas and thermal waters. Some of these waters have been used for medicinal purposes. This dissertation aims to characterize the history of thermalism in Europe and Portugal, and to characterize the geological formation, justifying the occurrence of volcanic phenomena in the areas under study, to understand more easily the historical, social, architectural and patrimonial evolution of the thermal areas of study on the island of São Miguel; and finally, to analyze the current potential of thermal spas in the field of health and leisure tourism. The most important spa is located in the Furnas valley, and is where much of the thermal history of the island of São Miguel is centered. It is in the Furnas Valley that there are several spaces with thermal purposes such as the “New Baths” (current Boutique Hotel Spa), the pool of Dona Beija, the pool of Silvina (or footwash) and the thermal tank of Terra Nostra Park. Finally, in Ribeira Grande there is a building dating from the beginning of the XIX century known as “Banhos da Coroa” and in Ladeira da Velha half of the XX century, there was also a bottled mineral water factory and spa that has photographic records of the 1950s. In the volcano of Sete Cidades, there is the spa of Ferraria, recently modified taking advantage of the existing facilities.	pt_PT
