Abstract(s)
ABSTRACT: The year 2020 witnessed a significant downturn due to the adverse effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. Economies across the globe were severely affected, leading to the suspension of nearly all trade and non-essential services, while only essential businesses remained operational. The tourism sector, in particular, bore the brunt of these restrictions, resulting in temporary closures and, in some unfortunate instances, permanent shutdowns due to insufficient human and financial resources to sustain operations. Consequently, measures were enforced to mitigate the impact of both the health and economic crises. The aim of this thesis is to analyze the impact of COVID-19 on the management of hotels in the Autonomous Region of the Azores. Therefore, the impact described above was analyzed by means of a questionnaire survey of hotel managers, from which 52 valid responses were obtained, using a qualitative and quantitative methodology. The aim was to identify the existing position of the hotel industry in the face of the pandemic, to analyze the measures taken to combat the effects of the SARS-CoV-2 virus and, finally, to understand how the measures taken during the pandemic were weighted, modified or eliminated after the pandemic and how the business recovered, in other words, to understand the impact of resilience on these businesses.
