Abstract(s)
A componente teórica compreende três capítulos.
O estudo empírico envolveu 63 gestores e empresários, homens e mulheres, cuja escolaridade varia entre o 1º ciclo do ensino básico e o ensino superior.
ABSTRACT: This study, “human diversity in the business context: perspectives of employers and local managers”, has a descriptive and exploratory nature and its main goal is to describe the thoughts of the responsible for the micaelenses private corporations, about human diversity in the work context. This work is structured in two parts. The theoretical component encloses three chapters. The first one relates to the approaches and perspectives of human diversity, the second one includes the factors that condition the diversity development in corporations and the third one that refers to the influence that diversity has on companies. The dimensions of human diversity emphasised in this research are: race/ethnics, nationality/ country of origin, gender, age, sexual orientation, social-status, repatriation, criminal history, alcohol and drug abuse, impairment and mental illness. Sixty-three entrepreneurs and managers, male and female, with an educational formation that varies between grammar school and college, have participated in the empiric study. The companies that are represented diverge, concerning the dimension and the activity sector. To collect the data it was elaborated a questionnaire that identifies the managers/entrepreneurs’ perspectives about the human diversity in companies, as well the exposures and capabilities of the business context for the inclusion of people who are usually discriminated by the regular work market, regarding specially the disabled people. The analysis of the results suggests a bigger tolerance to issues like race/ethnics, sexual orientation rather than to other diversity dimensions, such as drug abuse and mental illness. The knowledge apportionment and the increase of productivity are presented as some of the essential benefits of diversity. Regarding the drawbacks, managers/entrepreneurs highlight the difficulty in measuring the impact of human diversity in companies. Also, concerning the endorsement needed to develop the human diversity in companies, managers/entrepreneurs think that is crucial to promote educational formation in the management of human variety. Concluding, it seems like there is a bigger tolerance to cultural differences rather than to drug abuse and mental illness. As for disability, managers reveal the need to qualify people and point out the lack of information about people’s professional abilities. In this study, limits are shown and some ideas for future investigation are presented.
