Abstract(s)
ABSTRACT: The following research was elaborated with the purpose of analyzing the seasonality impacts in the hospitality industry in the Azores. Seasonality is a complex phenomenon that challenges company’s operations and management and demands adequate strategies. Phenomenon complexity requires the subdivision of the demand and offers factors. The demand factors are the joint conditions and motivations of travellers and offer factors combine the destination features and all the participants (public and private). The dynamic between demand and offer factors will define the seasonality intensity, which means the more synergistic they are the less difference will exist on occupation during the year. Seasonality could be investigated from different perspectives. For this study, we centered our analysis on the directors / managers of tourist accommodations in perspective. We selected a group of accommodations with different categories and typologies in order to determine the similarities and distinctions between them. The investigation was conducted according with the qualitative method, using interviews with the respective accommodation’s managers and proceeding then to the transcription of them in order to compare the contributions and draw conclusions. The results show an uneven distribution of sales throughout the year, with higher concentration in summer and lower in winter. Still some hotel directors mention a progress has been in recent years, and identify a trend that predicts a decrease in the intensity of the seasonality in the region, due to the liberalization of airspace and more promotion of the destination and development of off-season events that attract tourists to the region.
