Abstract(s)
ABSTRACT: The following dissertation aims at raising awareness to the former Santana Aerodrome, located in the municipality of Ribeira Grande, in the island of São Miguel, or what is left of it, since the passage of time and the abandonment of those airport facilities did not spare the edified structure that gave it some visibility in the landscape. In the first part, we approach the historical context (World War II) that lead to the building of this aviation field and its military usage until the end of the conflict. The second part is dedicated to the transition from its military usage to civil aeronautics, headed by the company known as SATA (initials that, in Portuguese, stand for “Sociedade Açoreana de Transportes Aéreos”, ie, Azorean Society of Air Transportation), which consolidated and developed the support equipment for the Aerodrome, ensuring its functioning between 1947 and 1969 and bestowing it with its own identity. After the inauguration of the Nordela airport in 1969, located in the suburbs of Ponta Delgada, there was a progressive degradation of the Santana aerodrome structure and the area that used to be occupied by the airstrip went back to its initial agricultural usage. After more than half a century after its abandonment, the “Aerovacas”, as it was known in the island, was completely erased from the landscape and the purpose of this work is, through support documentation and the printed media from that time, contribute to ensure that this place that has such a strong connection with the history of the aviation in the Azores and with the initial steps of the air company SATA is not erased from public memory.
