ABSTRACT: This Dissertation is entitled “Verbal expression and communication in the spiral of the philosophical research community” and is the result of the final work prepared for the completion of the Master's Degree in Philosophy for Children at the University of the Azores. “How can holding sessions in a philosophical research community that use works of Children’s Literature as a starting point promote children’s verbal expression and communication?” – was the initial question that gave rise to the research. This question was motivated by our work as primary school teacher at a school in the Azores (Portugal) and by having experienced the methodology of the philosophical research community for the first time when we started this Master's degree. This experience added to our educational practice the suspicion that Literature can constitute an invaluable ally of Philosophy, in promoting an environment conducive to the joint verbalization of thought, and led us to want to investigate some of the benefits that can occur when the two come together. In order to answer the initial question, we deepened our knowledge of how, when and where the term community of philosophical inquiry emerged, the method chosen to implement the original Philosophy for Children Program. Having identified the characteristics of the community of philosophical inquiry, we sought to situate them within the movement of the so-called Philosophy for/with Children and explored some of the implications of adopting this method in Education. In an attempt to understand the possible relationship between holding sessions in a community of philosophical research and promoting verbalization, we highlight the link between verbal expression and communication and the reading of works of Children's Literature in elementary school. Throughout this work, we have tried to deepen our own knowledge of the concepts related to the topic we have chosen, gathering the necessary information from the work of some of the authors who have already studied the subject and trying to apply this knowledge in practice with our own philosophical research community. We conclude that the exploration of literary works can promote an exercise in imaginative verbalization that allows members of the research community, especially when they are children, to have increasing availability and involvement with the themes of the dialogue, which is fundamental for their philosophical exploration.
