Abstract(s)
ABSTRACT: Tunas belong to a large family of oceanic fish called Scombridae, which includes, in addition to what is popularly referred to as tuna, mackerels, bonitos, and wahoos. All have migratory habits, fast growth and many have, along with swordfish and marlin, a unique feature in fish - they are endothermic i.e. they are able to retain their generated metabolic heat to perform vital functions in cold waters and that naturally includes fast swimming. Nine species of Scombrids are known in the Azores and amongst them the tunas are certainly the most sought by fishing fleets: Bluefin Thunnus thynnus, Albacore, T. alalunga, Yellowfin T. albacares and Bigeye T. obesus.
