ABSTRACT: This dissertation examines the volatility of Portugal´s Daily Economic Activity Indicator (IDAE) from 2020 to 2024 using GARCH models (GARCH, GARCH-M, and TGARCH) with Normal, t-Student, and GED distributions. The T-GARCH with GED provided the best fit, capturing persistence and significant negative asymmetry, indicating a stronger impact of positive shocks on volatility. A statistically significant negative relationship between volatility and IDEA was found, though not in the best-fitting fullsample model. Sub-period analyses (COVID-19 and geopolitical conflicts) confirm volatility persistence and reveal that asymmetry depends on timing, sample size, and type of error distribution used. Sub-period analyses (COVID-19 and geopolitical conflicts) confirmed volatility persistence. The study highlights the value of high-frequency data for uncovering often underestimated effects and suggests future research extends time horizons, including various economic cycles, and test alternative distributions for robustness.
