- Anti-aging activity of Lobophora variegata ethanolic and methanolic extracts and their fractionsPublication . Rosa, Gonçalo P.; Costa, Ana C.; Medeiros, D.; Seca, Ana M. L.; Barreto, Maria do CarmoSeaweed have promising applications within food, cosmetic and health industries, which led to an increased interest in studying these organisms [1]. In several coastal areas, thousands of tons of macroalgae are cast on beaches and shorelines and it would be very interesting if this biomass could be managed, allowing the extraction of added-value compounds. In this context, polar extracts (methanol and ethanol) of a macroalgal beach cast sample mainly composed of “Lobophora variegate” were prepared and the anti-aging and antioxidant activities were evaluated. The preliminary results showed interesting results, and thus these crude extracts were then fractionated sequentially by their solubility in dichloromethane, acetone and ethyl acetate, resulting in 4 semi-pure fractions each, which were also tested. Fractions A1.1.1 and A1.2.3 were very good tyrosinase inhibitors (IC₅₀ = 37.87 and 24.01 μg/mL, respectively) and fractions A1.1.2 and A1.2.2 presented very good inhibition of elastase (IC₅₀ = 44.76 and 20.86 μg/mL, respectively). However, none of the fractions was active against collagenase. These results show that further purifications of these fractions can lead to the isolation of bioactive added-value compounds.
- Ask a Scientist : using place-based mobile learning to promote adolescents’ interest in naturePublication . Silva, Alexandra R.; Gabriel, Rosalina; Arroz, Ana Moura; Sousa, Daniel; Piasentin, Flora Bonazzi; Rosário, Isabel Amorim do; Matos, SóniaQuestioning can be an important instrument to promote students' interest in nature. In this study, based on questions from local adolescents about nature, we designed mobile learning materials focused on local nature-rich environments in the form of podcast episodes and tested them, in a quasi-experimental design, with a new group of adolescents to assess their efficacy in promoting participants’ curiosity about nature. Contributions of this study include insights for future research on technological nature and adolescents' interaction with nature and educational developments related to place-based learning for nature conservation.
- Cosmeceutical Potential of the Green Macroalga Caulerpa ProliferaPublication . Rosa, Gonçalo P.; Seca, Ana M. L.; Barreto, Maria do Carmo; Pinto, Diana C. G. A.The present cosmeceutical industry has been gradually shifting its interest from products based on synthetic compounds to macroalgae-based products due to their interesting antiaging properties but also to their lower cytotoxicity and allergens content. Molecules isolated from macroalgae already showed potential as either active cosmetic ingredients or key elements for the consistency of the cosmetic formulation. In this regard, it is of foremost importance to keep studying the chemical composition of different algal species, aiming to find new compounds with cosmeceutical potential. […].

- Evaluating the effectiveness of nature-based solutions to climate change adaptation : A literature review of existing frameworks and indicatorsPublication . Halim, Firdaous; Fonseca, Catarina; O'Leary, Bethan C.; Villasante, SebastiánClimate change is generating a broad range of negative impacts worldwide, particularly on marine and coastal ecosystems (MCE) (IPCC-SROCC, 2019 and IPBES-IPCC, 2021). These impacts include coastal flooding and erosion, sea-level rise and storm surges. To adapt to these adverse effects and improve the well-being of coastal communities, engineered approaches have traditionally been used; however, there is growing recognition of the potential of Nature-based Solutions (NbS) to address these impacts while enhancing biodiversity (Baustian et al., 2020 and Chausson et al., 2020). NbS are actions that aim to address societal challenges and provide socialecological benefits by harnessing ecological processes (Cohen-Shacham et al., 2016). They have the potential to support climate change adaptation, for example, through storm surge attenuation, wave height reduction and flood protection; thus, enhancing ecosystem resilience and the provision of ecosystem services (i.e., improved fish stocks, biodiversity conservation, coastal tourism and recreation) (Chausson et al., 2020; Seddon et al., 2020; UNEP, 2021). - Evaluation of ETICS characteristics that affect surface mould developmentPublication . Parracha, João Luís; Cortay, Armand; Borsoi, Giovanni; Veiga, Rosário; Nunes, LinaExternal Thermal Insulation Composite Systems (ETICS) are nowadays often used in new constructions but are also one of the most frequently used thermal retrofitting solutions for buildings. These systems have several advantages such as low installation cost, ease of application and increased thermal efficiency. Nevertheless, a number of questions have been raised on their long-time durability particularly related to biodeterioration. Biological growth is strongly influenced by several parameters, such as water content, temperature, pH but also by the type and hygroscopic properties of the building materials. It is therefore essential to understand and correlate those properties with biological growth. This paper aims at evaluating some ETICS characteristics that might influence surface mould development which is recognized as one of the major groups of deteriorating organisms. The susceptibility of the surface finishing layer and thermal insulation to biological growth was assessed through natural inocula and selected fungi and, whenever possible, correlated with water absorption and drying capacity. This study is part of a wider research project: WGB_Shield (Shielding building‘ facades on cities revitalization. Triple-resistance for water, graffiti and biocolonization of external thermal insulation systems) that aims at the development of ETICS with improved durability in the urban environment. Further development on this issue are ongoing.
- The Field Guide app : Connecting island communities to local conservation through mobile interactionPublication . Sousa, Daniel; Rocha Silva, Alexandra Filipa; Rosário, Isabel Amorim do; Ashby, Simone; Arroz, Ana Moura; Piasentin, Flora Bonazzi; Gabriel, Rosalina; Matos, SóniaHere we present Field Guide, a mobile application (app) designed to connect communities to nature-rich environments, which play a crucial role in nature conservation efforts. The app aligns to a mode of science communication that seeks to establish direct contact between publics and specialised scientific communities, most commonly known as the ’ask a scientist’ approach. Field Guide uses a geolocation positioning system to offer users the opportunity to pose questions to scientists whilst exploring a nature conservation site. In this demo, we display the app as a mock-up presentation before its first use by children and teenagers during afield-trip to a nature trail later in 2021.
- GC- and UHPLC-MS Profiles as a Tool to Valorizate the Red Alga Asparagopsis armataPublication . Lesenfants, Marie L.; Seca, Ana M. L.; Silva, Artur M. S.; Pinto, Diana C. G. A.Asparagopsis armata is considered a biological invader and this red alga is in the last few years one of the worst nightmares for Azores coast biodiversity. So efforts to find an economically valuable application are welcome. In this context biological evaluations of its extracts, such as anti-aging, antioxidant and anticholinesterasic activities, were recently presented [1,2]. Naturally, the knowledge of this species chemical composition is utmost importance not only to find some valuable utilization but also to discovery its mechanisms of defence that can explain its invasive behaviour. In our effort to contribute to this problem solution we establish the GC-MS and UHPLC-MS profiles of both the non-polar and polar extracts. The main compounds in the lipophilic extract were palmitic acid and 1-monopalmitin and brominated compounds dominate both extracts. The detailed results will be presented and discussed in the presentation.
