- Business and events tourism in the Azores: the case study of the International Big Game Fishing TournamentPublication . Silvestre, Natacha de Mendonça; Moniz, Ana Isabel Arruda; Batista, Maria da Graça CâmaraAtualmente os eventos são utilizados como instrumento de promoção turística e como forma de incremento da economia regional (Chang, 2006). A Associação de Turismo dos Açores refere que “dando continuidade ao aumento da notoriedade do destino Açores através da captação de eventos internacionais (...) continuaremos a conjugar esforços, junto dos respetivos públicos-alvo, de modo a potenciar a comercialização da Região através de pacotes turísticos” (ATA, 2015, pág. 20). O presente estudo pretende aferir: a) se o Torneio Internacional de Big Game Fishing (TIBGF) contribui para a divulgação dos Açores, enquanto destino para a prática da pesca desportiva e b) se a estratégia de promoção ao evento está a surtir efeito na divulgação deste produto turístico junto dos mercados-alvos com maior potencial. A recolha de dados é efetuada através de entrevistas diretas aos organizadores do TIBGF e de inquéritos por questionário aos participantes do evento. Os resultados demonstram que a Região é capaz de criar e captar eventos internacionais orientados para nichos de mercado. Todavia, no que respeita à promoção e comercialização do evento, a estratégia adotada fica aquém das expectativas. Numa altura em que as autoridades regionais estão a implementar programas de apoio à captação e promoção de eventos, importa avaliar a eficácia das políticas promocionais no que respeita à afirmação da marca Açores no contexto internacional.
- Tourist destination image and consumer behaviour : the case of the AzoresPublication . Melo, Helena Maria Pascoal; Moniz, Ana Isabel Arruda; Silva, FranciscoNowadays places seek to become more distinctive in an increasingly competitive market and the image is a decisive element in the selection of a tourist destination. This research aims to understand the overall image of the Azores as a tourist destination from major source markets, and also aims to ascertain the level of satisfaction and future expectations of these markets concerning the region. The literature review addresses the definition of tourist destination image and the issue of satisfaction since these influences the intention to return and / or intention to recommend the tourist destination. The results indicate that: (1) the overall image influence satisfaction and intention to recommend and/or return to the tourist destination; (2) satisfaction influence the intention to recommend and/or return to the tourist destination. We also verified that most of the tourists are very satisfied with the destination in study, as well as a very positive overall image about the Azores.
- A Touristic big-game fishing in San Michael Island (Azores) : evaluating anglers’ profiles, perceptions about the destination and business revenuesPublication . Vieira, José Cabral; Antunes, Marcos Paulo CarolinoTourism is growing at a fast pace in the Azores’ archipelago. The landscape and marine wildlife have been viewed as relevant attractions of this destination. The ocean which surrounds the islands encompasses many market opportunities and niches such a surfing, fishing, scuba diving, shark diving and dolphin and whale watching, among others. This paper examines angler opinions about the destination, angler profiles and business revenues of touristic big-game fishing in the island of San Michael, Azores (Portugal). For this purpose, a survey was carried out to visitors who engaged in that activity and to vessels’ owners. In addition, some information was gathered from official data sources. The results reveal that this activity already generates a reasonable contribution to the touristic revenue of the island. There is also evidence based on respondents’ opinion that such an emerging market niche has a potential to expand and compete with other touristic regions in the practice of this recreational activity.
