- Modelo de gestão integrado do setor hoteleiro no combate à crise - destinos insularesPublication . Figueira, Manuel Ricardo Faísca; Dias, Sandra Micaela Costa; Almeida, António Manuel Martins deAs crises que têm assolado o mundo, como por exemplo crise económica de 2008, a pandémica causada pelo COVID-19 e mais recentemente a crise energética, trazem novos desafios à comunidade científica. Observa-se a necessidade de existir um aprofundamento no conhecimento de ferramentas capazes de responder às necessidades das organizações quando estas combatem mudanças inesperadas e de impacto mundial. O presente trabalho de investigação é subordinado ao tema estratégia de gestão em situações de crise, incorporando medidas de combate à crise disponíveis na esfera empresarial ou medidas de apoio governamental. À pergunta de partida, se as empresas do setor hoteleiro conseguem sobreviver a uma crise com origem no macro meio ambiente da empresa, surgiram várias perguntas derivadas. De entre as várias medidas estudadas e da sua importância na recuperação económica das empresas, apresenta-se uma proposta de modelo integrando as três dimensões analisadas no estudo: medidas disponíveis na esfera empresarial, medidas de apoio governamental e as competências e traços de personalidade dos gestores. Para a elaboração deste estudo, o processo de investigação dividiu-se em pesquisa bibliográfica e metodologia de investigação por inquérito, com a elaboração de um questionário respondido pelos diretores ou gestores de todos os estabelecimentos de alojamento da Região Autónoma da Madeira, tendo sido validados 93 questionários. Dos resultados do presente estudo, é de destacar que uma estratégia de combate a crises com origem no macro meio ambiente da empresa deverá integrar várias medidas, algumas que se encontram disponíveis na esfera empresarial e outras de apoio governamental, sendo que a importância das mesmas para a recuperação económica do estabelecimento varia consoante o tipo de estabelecimento em causa. As necessidades e dificuldades, variam consoante a categoria e/ou dimensão do estabelecimento. O estudo demonstrou, entre outras evidências, quais foram as medidas mais importantes no combate à crise e que mais de metade dos estabelecimentos de alojamento de maior dimensão, não teriam conseguido sobreviver à crise pandémica sem as medidas de apoio governamental. Também as competências e os traços de personalidade dos gestores assumem um papel importante na medida em que influenciam a sua performance.
- Fluoride levels in water sources inside the crater of Furnas volcano: Potential health implications for local communities and touristsPublication . Linhares, Diana; Gaspar, Diogo; Bernardo, Filipe; Beney, Isabelle; Garcia, Patrícia; dos Santos Rodrigues, ArmindoABSTRACT: Fluoride, a naturally occurring mineral, is widely recognized for its dual role in human health. At optimal concentrations, it provides dental benefits; however, excessive fluoride can lead to dental and skeletal fluorosis. Volcanic regions are known for their geothermal water sources that contain elevated levels of fluoride, raising concerns about potential health impacts on local populations. This study focuses on the Furnas volcano region at the Island of São Miguel, Azores, where natural springs are promoted for their therapeutic and medicinal properties. However, these springs also raise concerns about health risks due to fluoride exposure, as they are freely consumed by locals and tourists without any formal treatment or monitoring. Eighteen water samples were collected from natural springs in the village of Furnas. In situ measurements were taken forphysicochemical parameters such as pH, temperature, and conductivity. Fluoride concentrations were quantified using a potentiometric method with a fluoride ion-selective electrode. To assess risks, we estimated daily fluoride intake (DFI) and calculated the Hazard Quotient (HQ) for both children and adults. The fluoride concentrations in the samples ranged from 0.47 mg/L to 5.48 mg/L, with 72 % exceeding the recommended limit of 1.5 mg/L for drinking water. Significant correlations were found between temperature, conductivity, and fluoride concentration. Hazard Quotient values indicated potential health risks for children consuming untreated spring water. Waters categorized as hypothermal exhibited significantly lower fluoride concentrations compared to mesothermal, thermal, and hyperthermal samples. These findings highlight the impact of volcanic activity on fluoride levels in the natural springs of Furnas, emphasizing the need for regular monitoring and public awareness. While these waters are frequently consumed for their perceived health benefits, elevated fluoride levels may pose health risks to residents and tourists, demanding informed decision-making and enhanced water safety measures.
- BioTIME 2.0: Expanding and Improving a Database of Biodiversity Time SeriesPublication . Dornelas, Maria; Matthews, Thomas; Zvuloni, Assaf; Davies, JonathanABSTARCT: Motivation - Here, we make available a second version of the BioTIME database, which compiles records of abundance estimates for species in sample events of ecological assemblages through time. The updated version expands version 1.0 of the database by doubling the number of studies and includes substantial additional curation to the taxonomic accuracy of the records, as well as the metadata. Moreover, we now provide an R package (BioTIMEr) to facilitate use of the database. Main Types of Variables Included - The database is composed of one main data table containing the abundance records and 11 metadata tables. The data are organised in a hierarchy of scales where 11,989,233 records are nested in 1,603,067 sample events, from 553,253 sampling locations, which are nested in 708 studies. A study is defined as a sampling methodology applied to an assemblage for a minimum of 2 years. Spatial Location and Grain - Sampling locations in BioTIME are distributed across the planet, including marine, terrestrial and freshwater realms. Spatial grain size and extent vary across studies depending on sampling methodology. We recommend gridding of sampling locations into areas of consistent size. Time Period and Grain - The earliest time series in BioTIME start in 1874, and the most recent records are from 2023. Temporal grain and duration vary across studies. We recommend doing sample-level rarefaction to ensure consistent sampling effort through time before calculating any diversity metric. Major Taxa and Level of Measurement - The database includes any eukaryotic taxa, with a combined total of 56,400 taxa. Software Format - csv and. SQL.
