Abstract(s)
ABSTRACT: Crises that have impacted the world, including the 2008 economic downturn, the COVID-19 pandemic, and, more recently, the energy crisis, have introduced new challenges for the scientific community. There is a need for more in-depth knowledge of tools capable of responding to the needs of organisations when they face unexpected changes with a global impact The theme of this research is management strategy in crisis situations, incorporating crisis-fighting measures available in the business sphere or government support measures. The starting question, whether companies in the hotel sector can survive a crisis originating in the company's macro-environment, was followed by a number of derived questions. From among the various measures studied and their importance in the economic recovery of companies, a proposed model is presented integrating the three dimensions analysed in the study: measures available in the business sphere, government support measures and the skills and personality traits of managers. In order to carry out this study, the research process was divided into bibliographical research and survey research methodology, with the preparation of a questionnaire answered by the directors or managers of all the accommodation establishments in the Autonomous Region of Madeira. 93 questionnaires were validated. From the results of this study, it should be emphasised that a strategy to combat crises originating in the company's macro-environment should include various measures, some of which are available in the business sphere and others which are supported by the government, and their importance for the economic recovery of the establishment varies depending on the type of establishment in question. The needs and difficulties vary according to the category and/or size of the establishment. The study showed, among other things, which measures were most important in combating the crisis and that more than half of the larger accommodation establishments would not have survived the pandemic crisis without government support measures. Managers' competences and personality traits also play an important role, influencing their performance.
