- Limpet shell modifications at intertidal hydrothermal ventsPublication .
- Comparison of Azorean tea theanine to teas from other origins by HPLC/DAD/FD. Effect of fermentation, drying temperature, drying time and shoot maturityPublication . Baptista, José; Lima, Elisabete; Paiva, Lisete S.; Andrade, Ana L.; Alves, Maria G.The objectives of the present study were the determination of theanine (a specific amino acid of tea leaves with repercussion in human neuronal activity) by HPLC with o-phthaldialdehyde derivatisation prior analysis and comparison of its level in samples from different origins or from the same origin (Azores Islands) but with different processing conditions (fermentation, drying temperature and drying time) and shoot maturity. The results revealed a higher level of theanine in the Azorean green tea (3.10%), the only one produced in Europe, as compared with the Chinese, Japanese, Korean and Taiwan green teas that have an average theanine content of 1.52%, 1.34%, 0.89% and 2.76% of the dry weight (dw) of tea leaves, respectively. The fermentation for a longer period of time results in less theanine remaining (2.28% and 3.10% of dw for fermented and non-fermented tea, respectively). The drying temperature and time of the drying process have an inversely strong effect (4.45% and 5.65% of dw for dried at 55 °C during 8.50 h and at 40 °C during 7.10 h, respectively). The younger tea shoots have a higher theanine content than mature leaves (7.02% and 6.10% of dw, respectively). Our data suggested that a new type of Azorean theanine-rich tea may be produced by modifying the manufacturing processes of the younger tea shoots.
- Genetic Overlap of Schizophrenia and Bipolar Disorder in a High-Density Linkage Survey inthe Portuguese Island PopulationPublication . Fanous, Ayman H.; Middleton, Frank A.; Gentile, Karen; Amdur, Richard L.; Maher, Brion S.; Zhao, Zhongming; Sun, Jingchun; Medeiros, Helena; Carvalho, Célia; Ferreira, Susana R.; Macedo, António; Knowles, James A.; Azevedo, Maria H.; Pato, Michele T.; Pato, Carlos N.Recent family and genome-wide association studies strongly suggest shared genetic risk factors for schizophrenia (SZ) and bipolar disorder (BP). However, linkage studies have not been used to test for statistically significant genome-wide overlap between them. Forty-seven Portuguese families with sibpairs concordant for SZ, BP, or psychosis (PSY, which includes either SZ or psychotic BP) were genotyped for over 57,000 markers using the Affymetrix 50K Xba SNP array. NPL and Kong and Cox LOD scores were calculated in Merlin for all three phenotypes. Empirical significance was determined using 1,000 gene-dropping simulations. Significance of genome-wide genetic overlap between SZ and BP was determined by the number of simulated BP scans having the same number of loci jointly linked with the real SZ scan, and vice versa. For all three phenotypes, a number of regions previously linked in this sample remained so. For BP, chromosome 1p36 achieved significance (11.54-15.71 MB, LOD = 3.51), whereas it was not even suggestively linked at lower marker densities, as did chromosome 11q14.1 (89.32-90.15 MB, NPL = 4.15). Four chromosomes had loci at which both SZ and BP had NPL ≥ 1.98, which was more than would be expected by chance (empirical P = 0.01 using simulated SZ scans; 0.07 using simulated BP scans), although they did not necessarily meet criteria for suggestive linkage individually. These results suggest that high-density marker maps may provide greater power and precision in linkage studies than lower density maps. They also further support the hypothesis that SZ and BP share at least some risk alleles.

- Mother tongue education: what Portuguese language students say they should learn in High School?Publication . Mira Leal, SusanaWhat students shall or shall not learn in mother tongue classes is not a consensual topic. The curricular policies in the Portuguese Language Area tend to follow the configuration of the educational systems as a whole and interact with other systems (social values, political programs, scientific fields, economics, technological innovations, media discussions...). Policy on mother tongue education in Portugal is changing from a cultural heritage perspective to a more communicative one. Language teaching is, however, influenced by teachers’ beliefs, values and routines, and language learning relates to students’ features, ideas and previous experiences. In a study carried out in the Portuguese Archipelago of Azores (Mira Leal, 2008), among other things, we asked high school students : Should Portuguese language classes be compulsory in High School? Why / why not? What do students do/learn in language classes? What should students do/learn? How are students assessed in language classes? How should they be assessed? What characteristics should a Portuguese language teacher have?
- Sen, Sraffa and the revival of classical political economyPublication . Martins, Nuno O.In his new book The Idea of Justice, Amartya Sen argues that political theory should not consist only in the characterisation of ideal situations of perfect justice. In so doing, Sen is making, within the context of political theory, a similar argument to another he also made in economic theory, when crtiticising what he called the ‘rational fool’ of mainstream economics. Sen criticised the ideal and fictitious agent of mainstream economics, while advocating for a return to an integrated view of ethics and economics, which characterised many classical political economists who inspired Sen's theory of justice, from Adam Smith to Karl Marx. I will examine Sen's revival of classical political economy, and argue that a revival of classical political economy, which was undertaken earlier by Piero Sraffa, has much potential for bringing a more plural and realist perspective to economics.
