- Physiological responses of Pterocladia and Gelidium (Gelidiales, Rhodophyta) from the Azores, PortugalPublication . Fralick, Richard A.; Baldwin, Heather P.; Neto, Ana I.; Hehre, EdwardManometric studies were conducted on Pterocladia capillacea, Gelidium latifolium and Gelidium spinulosum from the Azores, Portugal to determine optimal values of temperature, light and salinity for growth. Physiological responses were considered in relation to vertical distribution patterns of these species commonly observed throughout the Azores. Optimal parameters for the growth of Pterocladia capillacea, Gelidium latifolium and G. spinulosum were 17 to 25 ºC, a photon flux density between 200 and 300 umol m -2 s -1 and salinities of 25 to 35 per thousand.
- Interspecific competition between three species of the genus Trichogramma (Hym., Trichogrammatidae)Publication . Tavares, João; Voegelé, JeanFor this study, three species of Trichogramma were submitted to competition in such a way that each competed with only one of the two other species simultaneously. The species were T. embryophagum Hartig, T. maidis Pintureau & Voegelé and T. buesi Voegelé. The host eggs Ephestia kuehniella (Lep., Pyralidae) were first parasitized by one of the species and when the first occupant was in a prenymphal instar (free living embryo, L1, L2 and L3), adults of the second species were allowed to parasitize the eggs containing the living instar of the first species. Unider these conditions, T. embryophagum eliminated the two other species, T. maidis just eliminated T. buesi but only in two situations (L2, and L3) and T. buesi was inactive in all situations. When host eggs are available in sufficient number, all three Trichogramma species show a high intra and interspecific discrimination for host eggs recently parasitized.
- Age and growth of the grey mullets (Pisces, Mugilidae) in the Ria de Aveiro (Portugal)Publication . Arruda, Luís M.; Azevedo, José M. N.; Neto, Ana I.EDAD Y CRECiMIENTO DE LOS MUGILiDOS (PISCES, Mugilidae) DE LA RÍA DE AVEIRO, PORTUGAL.
- Contribution to the taxonomy and ecology of the Azorean benthic marine algaePublication . Neto, Ana I.Algal zonation patterns were studied in two sites (Caloura, south coast and Ribeirinha, north coast) of the island of São Miguel, Azores. At each site two stations were studied and the transects revealed the occurrence of two distinct and well established algal zones. In the first zone, daily immersed and emersed by the tide, the algae were growing in a dense and, short tangle forming a mat, referred to as algal turf. In the second zone, which was wet most of the time, the algae were larger and frondose. A list of the species of benthic marine algae occurring on the algal turf of each station is given. Of the total of 47 species found, eight are new for the Azores and another 13 species recorded for the first time for São Miguel. Gigartina acicularis (Roth) Lamouroux and articulate coralline algae (Corallina oficinalis Linnaeus and Jania spp.) were the more common species. Seasonal variation of the algal turf was studied and related to mean monthly values of air and sea water temperatures, insolation and hours of light. The zonation patterns and composition of algal species were compared with those from other open rocky shores.
- Historical abandonment of children in the Azores, Portugal.Publication . Smith, Malcolm; Lima, ManuelaData from the period 1779-1828 were extracted from the books recording the entry and subsequent fate of babies abandoned in the Roda in the town of Horta on the island of Faial, Azores. The numbers of babies abandoned increased throughout the period, and their survival rate fluctuated markedly, with a low of under 10% in 1809 to a high of almost 50% in 1813. Overall, just over half the babies abandoned had died within the first year, and over 60% had died within two years. There is no differential abandonment or survival between the sexes. The seasonality of abandonment shows a peak in the first four months of the year, with a decline during the summer months. By contrast, deaths are most frequent in July and August, with another peak in the last quarter of the year. These Azorean data are consistent with the general pattern observed in Southern Europe, but offer some special opportunities to study the variation in nursing performance and the subsequent life-histories of expostos.
- Abundance, age-structure and growth and reproduction of gobies (Pisces, Gobiidae) in the Ria de Aveiro Lagoon (Portugal)Publication . Arruda, Luís M.; Azevedo, José M. N.; Neto, Ana I.Biological data concerning the abundance, age, growth and reproduction of seven species of gobies in the Ria de Aveiro lagoon (Portugal) are presented and discussed. The seasonal changes in species abundance are ascribed either to recruitment and mortality or to sporadic occurrence. Gobius niger, Pomatoschistus minutus and P. microps are included in the first case, and P. pictus, P. lozanoi, Aphia minuta and G. paganellus in the second. Only G. niger and G. paganellus were found to live more than 1 year. Growth took place all year round, although it was slow in winter. There is an indication that temperature influenced the start of growth in spring. Almost all the species (except G. paganellus and P. lozanoi) were found to spawn inside the lagoon. Spawning seasons were found to be shorter for G. niger and A. minuta (summer only) than for species of Pomatoschistus (with reproductive periods in winter and summer).
