- “Although I was alone, I always felt accompanied”: the experiences of adolescent girls walking in a forestPublication . Amorim do Rosário, Isabel; Gabriel, Rosalina; Arroz, AnaABSTRACT: How do adolescent girls interact with nature? Which affordances do they perceive and enact in nature-rich environments? Drawing on outdoor empirical research, which mobilises cultural probes, walking, and semistructured interviews as key methodological devices, this article provides possible answers to the research questions, as well as further interrogations issued from our analysis. Our research contributes to the field by developing new knowledge on the affordances of nature-rich environments for adolescents, in the context of informal environmental education and outdoor learning experiences. In this study, affordances are understood as ways along which the world comes into presence to human beings, providing contingently relational possibilities for interaction. The findings highlight that these teenagers’ experiences, were potentially transformative, bringing a higher sense of connection with more-thanhuman realms. They extend knowledge on adolescents’ ways of perceiving and interacting with nature, revealing previously unnoticed affordances, such as listen-ability, the affordances of the weather, and depictability.
- “Belonging without being”: Relationships between problematic gaming, internet use, and social group attachment in adolescencePublication . Barreto Carvalho, Célia; Moura Cabral, Joana; Teixeira, Marco; Cordeiro, Filipa; Costa, Rodrigo; Arroz, AnaABSTRACT: Gaming and Internet use are positively associated with benefits for interpersonal relationships in adolescence, with these behaviors when excessive having been negatively linked with positive aspects of interpersonal connections, such as secure attachment. Using a representative sample of 7918 Portuguese adolescents, with ages ranging from 13 to 19 (Mage = 15.5, 53.3% females), and three self-report measures of problematic gaming, problematic Internet use, and social group attachment (secure, anxious, avoidant), this cross-sectional study aimed to examine the associations between problematic gaming, as well as problematic Internet use, and secure and insecure (anxious and avoidant) social group attachment styles, in the groups with and without these problems. In the groups without problematic gaming and without problematic Internet use, excessive gaming and involvement with the Internet were negatively associated with secure social group attachment and positively associated with anxious social group attachment; on the other hand, in the groups with severe levels of these problems, problematic gaming and Internet use were positively associated with secure social group attachment and negatively associated with anxious social group attachment. These results go against what had been initially hypothesized and suggest that in the case of adolescents with severe levels of these problems, they may serve as an effective compensatory mechanism for coping with the negative effects of insecure attachment styles, which in turn likely contributes to the maintenance of problematic gaming and Internet use.

The project was launched in 2019 and had a second event in 2023 under the scope of the FCT-MACRISK project, surveying the historic public garden "Jardim Duque da Terceira", in the historical centre of Angra do Heroísmo, Terceira Island (Azores, Portugal). In addition to contributing directly to the knowledge of Azorean biota, BioBlitz Azores aims to engage the non-scientific community - including volunteers, amateur naturalists, students, teachers, families and other garden visitors - to foster a sense of community and raise awareness about Azorean biodiversity and its conservation.
- Discovering the allure of forests: Exploring adolescent queries in nature-rich environmentsPublication . Arroz, Ana; Gabriel, Rosalina; Rocha Silva, Alexandra Filipa; Piasentin, Flora; Amorim do Rosário, Isabel; Picanço, Ana; Matos, Sonia; Chang, Liang-ChihABSTRACT: This study explores adolescents’ inherent curiosity about nature through the production of self-generated questions during a field visit to a nature-rich environment, followed by descriptive-interpretative analysis using focus groups. Utilizing cultural probes and content-free question tokens, we collected 164 valid questions produced by 36 adolescents during the field session. Biotic elements, like species, turned out to be more intriguing than abiotic elements, originating 89.6% of the questions. The predominant topics were related to species adaptation, extinction, dispersion, and diversity, with younger adolescents showing a notable interest in nature conservation, while older adolescents highlighted biodiversity dynamics. These findings were corroborated by the ranking of the TOP-5 most interesting questions, where biodiversity dynamics, nature conservation and plant physiology occupied the same relative positions. Our results indicate that in a nature-rich environment and through an inquiry-based approach, adolescents were encouraged to express curiosity about nature. This approach could be a valuable educational strategy to enhance their connection to nature, promote conservation responsibility, and benefit the environment.

Contactar com a natureza, estando rodeado de árvores, ouvindo o canto dos pássaros, sentindo a relva nos pés, ou até mesmo ter uma planta em casa pode trazer-nos benefícios.
