Integrada no domínio dos Estudos de Tradução, esta dissertação de mestrado consiste numa análise comparativa entre a obra de José Saramago, A Jangada de Pedra e a sua tradução, The Stone Raft, realizada por Giovanni Pontiero. Serão objeto de estudo aprofundado um conjunto de casos tradutórios organizados em categorias de tradução relacionadas com a tradução de referências culturais, a tradução de expressões idiomáticas e enunciados proverbiais e a tradução de variação linguística. O exercício comparativo entre ambos os objetos culturais tem em vista levar a cabo uma reflexão acerca das estratégias de tradução aplicadas por parte do tradutor e perceber de que modo estas solucionaram os desafios tradutórios detetados, bem como observar detalhadamente as modificações e transformações que aconteceram aquando do processo criativo da tradução, aspeto este que se constitui como objetivo primordial do presente trabalho.
ABSTRACT: As part of the research field of Translation Studies, this Master’s dissertation consists of a comparative analysis between José Saramago's A Jangada de Pedra and its translation into the English language The Stone Raft, by Giovanni Pontiero. The numerous translation cases selected for study include the translation of cultural references, the translation of proverbs and idioms, and the translation of language registers. The emphasis of this comparative exercise is to reflect on the translation strategies used by the translator to overcome the obstacles found, as well as to observe the transformations that inevitably occurred during the creative process of translation.
