Abstract(s)
ABSTRACT: History seems to have relegated women to the fringes of society. While participating in fundamental changes that have occurred over time, women have shared different social functions with men. Although studies about mole and female work activity have generally not included generational aspects, we feel that the comparison of different generations will evince fundamental disparities in ways of relating to work. There has been a transformation in the image of women through the generations and, today, their experience in the workforce rejects their socio professional mobility and importance, as it has reconfigured the role of salaried work in society and created a new social image of salaried work. This article highlights just how much the situation of women has been affected by work, from one generation to another. Within the particular social history of the Azores, women pe1jormed domestic work predominantly, in accordance with the role they were assigned in Azorean society. The traditional system of agricultural work was gender based and substantiated social roles that were especially prominent between generations. In daily life and in work activity, an undeniable generation gap persists.
