ABSTRACT: This Internship Report emerges from the analysis and reflection of the pedagogical practices that occurred in the context of the curricular units of Pedagogical Internship I and II, which are part of the Master's Degree in Pre-school Education and Teaching in the 1st Cycle of Basic Education of the University of the Azores. This document is entitled Problem Solving in the development of mathematical thinking and active citizenship in Pre-school Education and in the 1st Cycle of Basic Education and focuses on the articulation between the areas of Mathematics and Personal and Social Training/Citizenship, not leaving aside the other areas of the curriculum, to promote significant learning, based on an integrative and integrated education. Its purpose is to promote an approach of the children/students to the reality that surrounds them, providing them with the necessary means for their responsible, conscious and autonomous action in it. As well as enable children /students to start from the resolution of situations/problems of citizenship, to develop their mathematical reasoning, understanding of its applicability/usefulness in real and, consequently, foster greater interest in learning Mathematics. Thus, the Report comprises two major parts that are in dialogue with each other. In the first part, we reflect on Citizenship and the curriculum, Mathematics and the curriculum, and Curriculum Integration as the path to success. In the second part, the research methodology is presented, the objectives that substantiate the development of this Internship Report are indicated, the conceptions of educational professionals about Citizenship and Mathematics and their relationship are identified and, finally, a descriptive and reflective analysis is made about the problem-solving praxis in the development of mathematical thinking and active citizenship in the contexts of Pre-School Education and Primary School Teaching. This Internship Report concludes that Personal Development/Citizenship and Mathematics in dialogue enhance significant learning. Their articulation makes these areas complement each other. Mathematics provides the logical reasoning that is fundamental for a conscious, autonomous and critical decision making, which is the attitude that is expected from a citizen in the 21st century.
