A presente dissertação de mestrado propôs-se evidenciar as dificuldades de tradução resultantes da linguagem tipicamente associada às identidades de género não-binárias, mediante a sua passagem da língua inglesa para a língua portuguesa, bem como encontrar alternativas que evitem uma marcação de género binária no texto de chegada. Para este efeito, selecionou-se como objeto de estudo a obra I Wish You All the Best, de Mason Deaver, no que respeita à linguagem direcionada à sua personagem principal e não-binária, Ben de Backer. De seguida, foram selecionadas palavras e/ou construções de índole neutra na língua inglesa, passíveis de apresentar uma problemática de índole binária na língua portuguesa. Encontrar as possíveis abordagens e estratégias de tradução mais indicadas para esta tarefa revelou-se um processo multifacetado, plural e criativo que, tal como o presente estudo acabou por comprovar, nunca seria possível num vácuo. Foi a partir de uma perspetiva interseccional, ideológica e inclusiva, bem como de todo um enquadramento teórico sobre questões relacionadas com o género e a linguagem – como percecionadas pelo feminismo e a teoria queer – além de uma análise às vertentes ativista, feminista e queer da tradução que se chegou às diferentes conclusões no presente estudo. Neste âmbito, as contribuições de figuras como Judith Butler, Mona Baker e Marc Démont impulsionaram uma contemplação fundamentada e aprofundada destas matérias, para além de potenciarem a desconstrução e subversão de diferentes categorias binárias subjacentes ao género, à linguagem e à tradução. Em particular, procurou-se aprofundar, ao nível teórico e prático, o modo como a linguagem e a tradução podem servir como ferramentas de opressão/libertação ao moldarem a perceção, as narrativas e a própria realidade. Observar a relação entre estas áreas permite um olhar mais inclusivo, consciente e elucidativo das várias forças de poder que se opõem a estes valores. Promover a manutenção da diferença, impulsionar a visibilidade linguística e social desta minoria de género e compreender as implicações éticas e políticas subjacentes a este tipo de projeto tradutório foram também preocupações centrais deste projeto.
ABSTRACT: This master’s dissertation aimed to highlight the translation challenges resulting from the language typically associated with non binary gender identities, through the transfer from the English language to the Portuguese language, as well as finding alternatives that avoid a binary gender marking in the target text. For this purpose, the book I Wish You All the Best by Mason Deaver was selected as the case study regarding the language concerning its main and non binary character, Ben de Backer. Subsequently, gender neutral words and/or constructions in the English language were selected, due to their potential to introduce binary gendered forms in the Portuguese language. Identifying the most suitable approaches and translation strategies to carry out this task turned out to be a multifaceted, plural and creative process, which as the present study ultimately established, would never be possible in a vacuum. An intersectional, ideological, and inclusive perspective was carried out, based on a theoretical framework regarding issues related to gender and language as perceived by feminism and queer theory in addition to an analysis of activist, feminist and queer facets of translation that allowed for different conclusions in the present study. In this regard, the contributions of figures such as Judith Butler, Mona Baker, and Marc Démont leveraged a well founded and in depth contemplation of these matters, in addition to promoting the deconstruction and subversion of different binary categories that underly gender, language and translation. Specifically, it proved crucial to develop an understanding of the ways both in theoretical and practical terms in which language and translation can serve as tools of oppression/liberation by shaping and altering perceptions, narratives, as well as reality itself. To observe the relationship between these different fields allows a more inclusive, conscious and insightful look at the various forces of power that oppose these values. Promoting the maintenance of difference, encouraging the linguistic and social visibility of this gender minority, and understanding the ethical and political implications underlying this type of translation project were also main concerns of this project.
