Abstract(s)
As necessidades energéticas da Humanidade são atualmente satisfeitas fundamentalmente a partir dos chamados combustíveis fósseis, como o carvão, o petróleo ou o gás natural.
O problema destes recursos é que da sua combustão não só resultam subprodutos tóxicos e poluentes, como as suas disponibilidades são altamente limitadas, estando previsto para breve a sua escassez (Regueiro et al., 2006).
No ano de 2022 verificamos que a temática da produção de energia via combustível fóssil esteve no centro das atenções mundiais, por um lado pela contínua poluição devido
à forma de extração e futura escassez e, por outro lado, às contínuas flutuações de mercado, esta última com grande impacto da guerra da Rússia com a Ucrânia.
Atendendo a esta problemática, e indo ao encontro das metas na Europa propostas pelo Conselho da União Europeia (2022), verificamos que na Região Autónoma dos
Açores (RAA) existe uma crescente preocupação em aumentar a capacidade de energia renovável.
É neste contexto que surge a motivação para desenvolver esta Dissertação de
Mestrado, cujo objetivo é perceber em que ponto nos encontramos na Região Autónoma dos Açores e onde poderemos chegar com o aumento de energias renováveis, atendendo ao crescente aumento dos preços dos combustíveis fósseis e futura escassez. Devido à insularidade da Região Autónoma dos Açores torna-se um assunto importante, já que tanto o custo do combustível fóssil e de investimento tem um grande impacto na região.

ABSTRACT: The energy needs of humanity are currently primarily met from so-called fossil fuels, such as coal, oil, or natural gas. The problem with these resources is that their combustion not only results in toxic and polluting byproducts, but their availabilities are highly limited, with their scarcity predicted in the near future (Regueiro et al., 2006). In the year 2022 we see the theme of energy production via fossil fuel in the center of attention, on one hand by the continuous concern about pollution due to the form of intake and scarcity and on the other side the continuous market fluctuations, the latter with great impact given Russia's war with Ukraine. Given these challenges and meeting the goals in Europe set by the Permanent Representatives Committee (2022), we see that in the Autonomous Region of the Azores there is a growing concern to increase renewable energy capacity. It is within this context the motivation to develop this Master's Dissertation arises, whose objective is to understand the current states in the Autonomous Region of the Azores and where we can reach with the increase of renewable energies, given the increasing price of fossil fuels and future scarcity. Addressing the insularity of the Autonomous Region of the Azores becomes an important issue, as both the cost of fossil fuel and investment has a major impact on the region.
