As artes tiveram um papel central nos processos de construção de sociedades perfeitas femininas no arquipélago dos Açores. A dádiva de doces e de objectos de arte criava laços de comunicação religiosa, instituía relações de poder no interior dos conventos, estreitava e aprofundava as relações familiares, económicas e políticas com a sociedade exterior. A instauração do
Liberalismo e a extinção dos conventos dispersaram as freiras artistas, uma
das quais se dedicou à criação e exposição do Arcano, a mais importante obra
de escultura de tradição conventual dos Açores.
ABSTRACT: The arts played a central role in the processes of construction of perfect female societies in the Azores archipelago. The gift of sweets and art objects created religious communication ties, established power relations within the convents, narrowed and deepened family, economic and political relations with the outside world. The instauration of Liberalism and the extinction of the female monasteries dispersed these nuns artists, one of which was devoted to the creation and exhibition of the Arcanum, the most important sculpture work of monastic tradition in Azores.
