O Pico nos textos dos viajantes dos séculos XVIII e XIX

Abstract(s)
Nos séculos XVIII e XIX, o arquipélago açoriano foi visitado por diversos viajantes: naturalistas, navegadores, geógrafos, historiadores, militares, escritores, entre outros. Os motivos destas visitas foram tão diversos quanto a diversidade cultural dos viajantes que fizeram das ilhas açorianas porto de passagem e rota curiosa para os seus estudos científicos e/ou aventuras: ingleses, americanos, espanhóis, franceses, italianos, entre outros, deixam-nos riquíssimos testemunhos da sua passagem no Arquipélago dos Açores.
A ilha do Pico é, frequentemente, uma das ilhas açorianas visitadas pelos viajantes estrangeiros. Na diversidade dos seus diários de viagem, de cariz científico, antropológico, ou generalista – de quem pretende apenas registar as suas jornadas –, são tecidas caracterizações do património natural e cultural da ilha do Pico, desde o clima, a geologia, os recursos hídricos, a flora, a fauna, às gentes, sua vivência e atividades económicas: agricultura, pecuária, comércio e transportes.
A combinação das imagens reproduzidas através da ótica dos viajantes, no que respeita ao meio natural e cultural da ilha do Pico, traduzem as suas perspetivas sobre o património natural e cultural da ilha nos séculos XVIII e XIX. Esta alteridade, presente nos testemunhos dos viajantes, aplicada ao estudo patrimonial da ilha do Pico, contribui para uma escrita da identidade do meio natural e dos habitantes da ilha, tecendo, por conseguinte, a identidade da paisagem cultural da ilha do Pico.
ABSTRACT: In the 18th and 19th centuries, the Azorean archipelago was visited by different travellers: naturalists, navigators, geographers, historians, members of the military, writers, among others. The reasons for these visits were as diverse as the cultural diversity of the travellers who made of a harbour of the Azorean islands to their scientific expeditions and/or adventures: English, American, Spanish, French, Italian, among others, left us with precious testimonials of their passage through the Archipelago of the Azores. Pico island is one of the Azorean islands often visited by foreign travellers. In their travel diaries, with a scientific, anthropological or generalist approach – whose writers only wish to record their journeys –, one can find characterizations of the natural and cultural heritage of the island of Pico, about its climate, geology, water resources, flora, the people and their ways of living, and their economic activities: agriculture, livestock production, trade and transportation. The combination of images obtained from the travellers’ perspective regarding the natural and cultural environment of the island of Pico reflect their perspectives on the natural and cultural heritage of the island on the 18th and 19th centuries. The presence of otherness on the traveller’s testimonials of Pico island’s heritage contributes to a representation of it’s natural environment and it’s inhabitants identity, therefore weaving the identity of the cultural landscape of the island of Pico.
