| dc.description.abstract | A imigração é um fenómeno social complexo que tem acompanhado a história da humanidade, moldando sociedades, economias e culturas ao longo do tempo. Em Portugal, a imigração assume particular relevância, especialmente nas últimas décadas, quando o país se transformou em um destino atrativo para diversos grupos migratórios. Este fenómeno é fruto de diversos fatores que incluem a busca por melhores oportunidades de vida, segurança, educação, entre outros. Assim, esta dissertação tem como principal objetivo analisar a contribuição da imigração no crescimento económico em Portugal, explorando também as alterações produzidas nos fluxos migratórios, aquando da crise financeira de 2008-2012 bem como da recente pandemia Covid-19. São abordados ainda aspetos como o envelhecimento demográfico, a sustentabilidade da Segurança Social e os impactos da imigração no mercado de trabalho. Deste modo, conclui-se que existe uma forte inércia nas três variáveis (imigração, PIB e desemprego), com os valores passados influenciando fortemente os valores presentes; a imigração tem um efeito positivo tanto no crescimento económico (aumento do PIB) quanto na redução do desemprego e o PIB passado não afeta diretamente a imigração, sugerindo que outros fatores, como políticas e condições internacionais, desempenham um papel mais importante na migração. Assim, destaca-se a importância da imigração na economia e no mercado de trabalho, sugerindo que os imigrantes trazem benefícios económicos e não são responsáveis por aumentar o desemprego, como muitas vezes se argumenta. | por |
| dc.description.abstract | ABSTRACT: Immigration is a complex social phenomenon that has accompanied humanity's history, shaping societies, economies, and cultures over time. In Portugal, immigration has taken on particular relevance, especially in recent decades, as the country has become an attractive destination for various migratory groups. This phenomenon is the result of several factors, including the search for better life opportunities, safety, and education, among others. Thus, this dissertation aims to analyse the contribution of immigration to economic growth in Portugal, also exploring the changes in migratory flows during the financial crisis of 2008-2012, and the recent Covid-19 pandemic. It also addresses aspects such as demographic aging, the sustainability of Social Security, and the impacts of immigration on the labour market. Therefore, it is concluded that there is strong inertia in the three variables (immigration, GDP, and unemployment), with past values strongly influencing present values; immigration has a positive effect on economic growth (increase in GDP) and reducing unemployment. Moreover, past GDP does not directly affect immigration, suggesting that other factors, such as policies and international conditions, play a more important role in migration. Thus, the importance of immigration in the economy and labour market is highlighted, suggesting that immigrants bring economic benefits and are not responsible for increasing unemployment, as is often argued. | eng |
