Com o fim da neutralidade portuguesa na guerra entre a Inglaterra e a França, em 1807, D. João retira-se para o Brasil e Portugal é invadido. A esquadra inglesa inicia um bloqueio aos portos portugueses e nos termos da aliança luso-britânica assume o papel principal na defesa das rotas do Atlântico. Estuda-se aqui a importância dos Açores nesta guerra, como ponto de abastecimento de cereais e como ponto estratégico e também as difíceis situações criadas que chegaram a pôr em perigo a soberania portuguesa. Estudam-se também as relações entre as autoridades insulares e os súbditos britânicos fixados nas ilhas.
ABSTRACT: Wilt the end of Portuguese neutrality in the war between England and France in 1807, Dom João returns to Brazil and Portugal is invaded. The English fleet begins to blockade Portuguese ports and in accord with the Luso-British alliance assumes a major role in defending Atlantic shipping routes. This is a Study of the importance of the Azores in the war, as point for loading cereals and as a strategic position, and also of the difficult situations which are created as Portuguese sovereignty is threatened. Relations between the insular authorities and British subjects resident in the islands are also considered.
