ABSTRACT: The objective of this dissertation is to analyze the role played by the island of Santa Maria in the international panorama, from its discovery or "rediscovery" to the present day. It will be examined in the available literature, the international references made to the Azores and inherently to Santa Maria, addressing the various episodes in which the island had a transatlantic relationship with other peoples in the historical, strategic and geopolitical context, referring to its most relevant historical events until the arrival of its golden period: the construction of the American air base in World War II and its purposes. At the same time, the various parallel events that took place during the war will be interpreted in the geopolitical and military chess of the time. Subsequently, its position from the "cold war" to the present day will be narrated, both from an international and national perspective. It will also be analyzed the alternatives that the island sought/seeks to survive the insularity that its dimensions and location accentuate in the field of modernity. In the end, the aim of this study will be to ascertain what was the true strategic importance of the island over time for Portugal, if this relevance continues to exist today and if in the future it will play a relevant geopolitical role, as a result of its geographical position in the Atlantic. The present research is carried out by the qualitative method of document analysis. The methodology used to study the different documents is based on an interpretative and critical analysis of the facts collected in primary sources and critical bibliography, seeking throughout the article, to address all the available data, some of which were declassified a few years ago, questioning to what extent the island of Santa Maria had/has a preponderant role in Portugal's transatlantic relations with other international actors.
