ABSTRACT: This study examines the determinants of corporate investment and its impact on labour productivity and employment levels in Portuguese companies. Using a combination of administrative and survey data, the key drivers behind corporate investment decisions are identified and how these investments influence labour productivity and employment dynamics are evaluated. The results show that financial leverage, growth potential, and firm age play a significant role in investment decisions, with evidence of a U-shaped relationship between age and investment rates. The analysis further demonstrates a positive relationship between investment and labour productivity, highlighting the important role of sustained investment in raising productivity levels. In addition, the findings reveal that investment and R&D expenditures significantly increase employment opportunities, particularly for skilled workers with tertiary education, supporting the notion that knowledge-intensive, high-skill industries are important to skilled employment growth. The results contribute to the existing literature by providing empirical insights specific to the Portuguese context and offer important considerations for policymakers and business leaders. A strategy that combines targeted support for R&D-intensive industries with policies that promote skills development could both encourage productive specialisation and help retain skilled workers in Portugal.
