| dc.description.abstract | Durante o século XIX, a localização geográfica do arquipélago, quase a meio do Atlântico Norte, entre a Europa e os Estados Unidos, encaminhou visitantes norte-americanos, em travessias transatlânticas, até aos Açores, e foi a natureza física açórica que mais os impressionou. Um desses viajantes foi Samuel Longfellow, irmão mais novo do conceituado poeta americano Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, que viajou até ao Faial, em 1843, por razões de saúde e para assumir as funções de preceptor dos filhos da família Dabney. Durante o ano e meio que viveu na Horta, escreveu cartas referindo a sua experiência e a natureza das ilhas, e criou desenhos retratando paisagens variadas do Faial e Pico. Partindo dessas cartas e desenhos, este artigo analisa as representações da natureza das ilhas aí recriadas, à luz da ecocrítica, uma corrente teórica recente que estuda a produção artístico-cultural em relação ao mundo físico. As cartas e os desenhos de Samuel Longfellow evocam as emoções e aspirações de um jovem, profundamente influenciado pelos movimentos do transcendentalism e do picturesque e firmemente alicerçado na tradição do antropocentrismo. Desta forma, retratam as reações e impressões de um norte-americano, influenciado pelos ideais espirituais e estéticos da sociedade oitocentista, onde tinha crescido e para onde iria voltar. | pt_PT |
| dc.description.abstract | ABSTRACT: During the 19th century, North-American trans-Atlantic travellers reached the Azores archipelago, located near the middle of the North Atlantic, between Europe and North America, and what most impressed them was the physical nature of the Azores. Among these was Samuel Longfellow, the youngest brother of the eminent American poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, who travelled to Faial in 1843 for health reasons and to be a live-in tutor to the Dabney family children. During the year and a half that he lived in Horta, Samuel wrote letters about his experience and the natural surroundings and drew sketches of varied landscapes in Faial and Pico. This article analyzes these representations of Azorean nature from the perspective of ecocriticism, a relatively recent theoretical approach that analyzes artistic and cultural phenomena in relation to the physical world. Samuel Longfellow’s letters and sketches evoke the emotions and aspirations of a young man who was deeply influenced by the transcendental and picturesque movements, clearly in keeping with the anthropocentric tradition. As such, they portray the reactions and impressions of a North-American who was influenced by the spiritual and aesthetic ideals of the 19th century society from whence he had come and to which he would return. | en |
