Abstract(s)
A construção de uma infraestrutura aeronáutica na Ilha de Santa Maria, no âmbito da Segunda Guerra Mundial, transformou esta parcela do Arquipélago dos Açores, por todos considerada das mais periféricas e ignoradas, num tão denso e dinâmico quanto efémero centro socioeconómico. O presente estudo, na senda do chamado Estudo das Ilhas ou Nissologia, visa analisar o papel que as ilhas desempenham nas Relações Internacionais e os impactos que estas têm naquelas, recorrendo ao caso particular da Ilha de Santa Maria, no século XX.
ABSTRACT: The construction of an aeronautical infrastructure on the island of Santa Maria, in the nineteen forties of the twentieth century, turned this portion of the Azores archipelago, considered by everyone as one of the most remote and ignored, in a dense and dynamic as well as ephemeral socio-economic center. This study, on the path of the Island Studies or Nissology, aims to analyse the role that islands play in International Relations and the impacts these have on them, using the particular case of the Island of Santa Maria, in the twentieth century.
