Esta dissertação de mestrado compara e analisa The Joy Luck Club e a sua tradução portuguesa O Clube da Sorte e da Alegria. O principal objetivo desta dissertação é examinar a relação entre tradução e cultura, mais especificamente determinar se a cultura chinesa-americana é transmitida aos leitores portugueses e de que forma é transmitida. Examinamos aspetos extratextuais e casos textuais e analisámo-los com base em conceitos teóricos fundamentais. Concluímos que existe uma tendência para optar pela invisibilidade do tradutor e que as referências culturais americanas e chinesas foram tratadas de forma diferente: os tradutores criaram menos dificuldades ao leitor para compreender a cultura americana do que a cultura chinesa. Quanto ao que se convencionou chamar a cultura chinesa-americana, da qual o Chinglish é um exemplo, a nossa análise mostra que as suas características gerais foram transmitidas ao leitor, embora tenha havido algumas perdas no caso do Chinglish.
ABSTRACT: This master’s dissertation compares and analyzes The Joy Luck Club and its Portuguese translation O Clube da Sorte e da Alegria. The main aim of this dissertation is to examine the relationship between translation and culture, more specifically to determine if and how the Chinese American culture is conveyed to Portuguese readers. We examine extratextual aspects and textual cases and analyze them based on key theoretical concepts. We conclude that there is a tendency to opt for a translator invisibility and that American and Chinese cultural references have been treated differently: the translators have created less difficulty for the reader to understand American culture than Chinese culture. As for what has been called the Chinese American culture, of which Chinglish is an example, our analysis shows that its general features have been conveyed to the reader, although there have been some losses in the case of Chinglish.
