| dc.description.abstract | Este trabalho apresenta um estudo comparativo entre o romance Gente Feliz com Lágrimas, de João de Melo, e a sua tradução para o inglês, Happy People in Tears, realizada por Elizabeth Lowe. Com base em teorias de tradução de autores como Even-Zohar, Antoine Berman, Lawrence Venuti, André Lefevere e Milton e Bandia, o estudo explora o papel da tradução na visibilidade de sistemas literários periféricos, como ainda é o português e, ainda mais, o açoriano, destacando o papel dos agentes de tradução, como a tradutora e a editora Tagus Press. Foca-se, em particular, na análise crítica das estratégias tradutórias adotadas por Elizabeth Lowe perante os desafios culturais e linguísticos suscitados pelo texto, como a tradução de referências culturais e de questões associadas ao heterolinguismo. Invocando a teoria de Lawrence Venuti, e à luz dos seus conceitos de “domesticação” e “estranhamento”, pretende-se aferir se, na tradução de Gente Feliz com Lágrimas, houve tendência para a adaptação dos valores da cultura de partida aos da cultura de chegada, isto é, para a adoção de um discurso fluido que minimiza ou elimina os traços distintivos da cultura de partida ou se, por outro lado, a tradução “obriga” o leitor anglófono a ir ao encontro do autor e a fazer um esforço de compreensão do contexto de partida. | por |
| dc.description.abstract | ABSTRACT: This paper makes a comparative study between the novel Gente Feliz com Lágrimas, by João de Melo, and its English version, Happy People in Tears, translated by Elizabeth Lowe. Drawing on the translation theories of authors such as Even-Zohar, Antoine Berman, Lawrence Venuti, André Lefevere, Milton and Bandia, the research explores the role of translation in increasing the visibility of peripheral literary systems, such as the Portuguese system and, even more so, the Azorean, highlighting the role of translation agents, including the translator and the publisher, Tagus Press. The focus is particularly on the critical analysis of the translation strategies employed by Elizabeth Lowe to address the cultural and linguistic challenges, such as the translation of cultural references and issues related to heterolingualism. Invoking Lawrence Venuti’s theory, and in light of his concepts of “domestication” and “foreignization”, the study aims to assess whether, in the translation of Gente Feliz com Lágrimas, there was a tendency to adapt the values of the source culture to those of the target culture, adopting a fluid discourse that minimizes or eliminates the distinctive traits of the source culture, or whether, on the other hand, the translation “compels” the Anglophone reader to engage with the author’s perspective and make an effort to understand the source context. | eng |
