Abstract(s)
ABSTRACT: The Azores are the Portuguese region with the highest poverty rate and, at the same time, with the largest number of RSI beneficiaries according to their resident population. This text shows that poverty, as measured by the RSI, is not homogeneously distributed throughout the regional territory, since it tends to be concentrated on the island of S. Miguel (the most populated). The question that arises is what justifies the place occupied by the Azores in the national context and what may explain the higher incidence of RSI beneficiaries. This paper seeks to mobilizes indicators to address this issue and outline some ideas to make a first attempt at an answer. Thus, it is concluded that the poverty rate in the Azores is highly influenced by the fact that it is on this island that the majority of the population of the archipelago lives.
