Abstract(s)
ABSTRACT: Philosophy for Children (P4C), introduced by Lipman across the world less than half a century ago, brought to modern school a new approach to philosophy and childhood. Lipman worked on philosophy for children through stimuli which are discussed democratically in the context of Communities of Philosophical Inquiry (CPI), where, through dialogue, children are encouraged to speak in the presence of a facilitator. The goal is for this dialogue to be stimulating for the development of critical and creative skills, leading children, adolescents, youths, and adults to autonomous critical thought, which is also a path for understanding the colaborative work and for increasing critical resistance. Lipman used novels to start the debates in CPIs. These novels aimed towards the development of various competencies in the areas of logic, politics, morals, and ethics, among others. They were accompanied by an activities manual with various suggestions for the facilitators. Our dissertation works on the concept of political autonomy from a philosophical and political point of view. The first chapter embarks on the political concept of autonomy from antiquity to the present time, focusing on the Autonomous Region of the Azores and on the way autonomy is substantiated there. The second chapter focuses on Lipman's perspective on philosophy for children. The basis of our work is an intentionally philosophical novel about political autonomy in the Azores, which aims to convey a vision of the islands not as a unit, but as nine units within the larger unit of the archipelago. The intention is to discuss, within an open and free community, topics such as insularity, justice, freedom, fear, uncertainty, and the limitations imposed by geography. Our proposal leaves the activities to be carried out within this scope to the facilitator. Images are also included in our novel representing nine stimuli on the theme: “Let's Talk About Autonomy”.
