A instituição das Misericórdias, criada por D. Leonor no final do século XV, constituiu um modelo assistencial de grande sucesso e rápida difusão pelo território nacional e ilhas Atlânticas. Na primeira década do século
XVI foi fundado em Ponta Delgada o hospital da Misericórdia com a sua capela anexa de São João Baptista, a qual seria integrada no novo templo construído no último terço da mesma centúria e dedicado ao Espírito Santo. Todo o conjunto desapareceu na primeira metade do século XIX, quase sem
deixar vestígios, após um longo processo de ruína. Com base na documentação
do arquivo da Misericórdia consultada e coligida pelo investigador Rodrigo Rodrigues, bem como em outras fontes coevas, foi possível compreender
a importância central da igreja da Misericórdia no panorama da arquitectura
quinhentista, não apenas da cidade de Ponta Delgada, mas ao nível regional, e descortinar os processos de encomenda, autoria, e obra desse edifício, permitindo ainda reconstituir, com relativa segurança, o plano, alçados e elementos decorativos presentes no interior do templo.
ABSTRACT: The Misericordias Institution, founded by Queen Leonor in the late XV century, encountered great success and was rapidly instituted across the mainland and Atlantic islands. During the first decade of the XVI century, the Misericordia Hospital was established in Ponta Delgada, along with the chapel of São João Baptista. The latter was incorporated into the temple of the Holly Spirit, built in the last third of the XVI century. However, both the hospital and the chapel had disappeared without a trace by the XIX century, due to a long process of deterioration. By virtue of the documentation found in the Misericordia´s archives, compliled by the researcher Rodrigo Rodrigues, it was possible to realize the great importance of the Misericordia Church in the realm of the 1500s Architecture, not only within the city of Ponta Delgada but also in the entire archipelago. The documentation also allowed for the understanding of the building itself, namely its commission, chief architect and construction process. Furthermore, it was possible to reconstitute the plans, elevations and the decorative elements of the interior.
