- Perspective The Azorean Biodiversity Portal: An internet database for regional biodiversity outreachPublication . Borges, Paulo A. V.; Gabriel, Rosalina; Arroz, Ana Margarida Moura; Costa, Ana C.; Cunha, Regina Tristão da; Silva, Luís; Pereira, Enésima; Martins, António M. de Frias; Reis, Francisco; Cardoso, PedroThere is a growing interest in academia to provide biodiversity data to both the scientific community and the public. We present an internet database of the terrestrial lichens, bryophytes, vascular plants, molluscs, arthropods, vertebrates and coastal invertebrates of the Azores archipelago (Portugal, North Atlantic): the Azorean Biodiversity Portal (ABP, http://www.azoresbioportal.angra.uac.pt/). This is a unique resource for fundamental research in systematics, biodiversity, education and conservation management. The ABP was based on a regional species database (ATLANTIS), comprised of grid-based spatial incidence information for c. 5000 species. Most of the data rely on a comprehensive literature survey (dating back to the 19th century) as well as unpublished records from recent field surveys in the Azores. The ABP disseminates the ATLANTIS database to the public, allowing universal, unrestricted access to much of its data. Complementarily, the ABP includes additional information of interest to the general public (e.g. literature on Macaronesian biodiversity) together with images from collections and/or live specimens for many species. In this contribution we explain the implementation of a regional biodiversity database, its architecture, achievements and outcomes, strengths and limitations; we further include a number of suggestions in order to implement similar initiatives.
- Geographic Technologies applied to Marine Spatial Planning and Integrated Coastal Zone ManagementPublication . Calado, Helena (ed.); Gil, Artur José Freire (ed.)Geotechnologies are revolutionizing the management of marine resources. What used to be hidden or inaccessible via traditional methods are now made available through remote sensing, tracking technologies and global positioning systems. These technologies enable the mapping and documentation of ecosystem characteristics for each location such as marine habitats, types of species, living and mineral resources, sea bottom morphology, and environmental condition. The capability of superimposing and analyzing these new data for each location and among various locations ensures a greater alignment with the ecosystem-based approach, which is defined as the overarching principle by the European Commission.
- On the occurrence of Mesophyllum expansum (Philippi) Cabioch et Mendoza (Melobesioideae, Corallinales, Rhodophyta) in the Mediterranean, the Canary Isles and the Azores.Publication . Athanasiadis, Athanasios; Neto, Ana I.We reviewed literature records, examined herbarium specimens and studied new collections referred to as Mesophyllum lichenoides from the Mediterranean and the North Atlantic, and report for the first time the presence of Mesophyllum expansum in the Canaries and the Azores. Both gametophytes and tetrasporophytes of M. expansum occur in the Canaries, while we found only tetrasporophytes (and sterile thalli) of the species in all other regions. We further consider the presence of M. lichenoides further south than Atlantic France in need of confirmation. A comparative study between these two species points to the number of rosette cells as the most reliable and easily diagnosed character, M. expansum most often having 911 and M. lichenoides 68 cells.

- Computable general equilibrium models : theory and applicationsPublication . Fortuna, Mário; Rege, SameerThe book is divided into two parts. The first part deals with the theory of general equilibrium and microeconomics necessary for any student to appreciate the derivation of the equations used in the models. It gives a brief overview of static and dynamic general equilibrium models with an objective of juxtaposing both to enable the novice reader to quickly grasp the benefits of different models. It also gives working programs in GAMS and R to play around with the parameters and appreciate the interplay between the parameters and model results and the limitations. We emphatically state that this is but a very very elementary introduction and meant only as a pre-cursor to the world of economic modelling. The second part deals with the main objective of the book, the dynamic general equilibrium model for the Azores and the various policy simulations from the model. Initially it explains in detail the model equations and the Social Accounting Matrix and then outlines the simulation results obtained from the model.

Silva, A.; Brotas, Vanda; Orive, E.; Neto, Ana I.During summer 2008, surveys were carried out around São Miguel island in the Azores archipelago (36–39ºN, 25–31ºW). [...].
