Nesta dissertação de mestrado elaborou-se uma tradução, de inglês para português, da obra de literatura infantil The Giggler Treatment, de Roddy Doyle, assim como um comentário à tradução. O objetivo deste último foi o de identificar os principais obstáculos enfrentados ao longo do processo de tradução e as soluções encontradas para os ultrapassar, refletindo sobre as consequências que as opções efetuadas tiveram sobre o texto e a experiência de leitura. Para tal, partiu-se de uma reflexão sobre as especificidades da tradução de literatura infantil e os desafios que a mesma coloca ao tradutor, assim como de uma identificação dos traços distintivos do estilo literário do autor, com particular atenção para a importância de que se revestem as referências culturais (sobretudo à cultura irlandesa) nas suas obras. Estas duas componentes sustentaram a tomada de decisão durante o processo de tradução.
ABSTRACT: In this dissertation a translation was made, from English into Portuguese, of the book of children’s literature The Giggler Treatment, by Roddy Doyle, as well as an explanatory comment on the given translation. The aim of this comment was to identify the main obstacles faced during the translation process and the solutions found to overcome them, reflecting on the consequences that the choices made had on the text and the reading experience. In order to do so, we started off with a reflection on the specificities of the translation of children’s literature and the challenges that it poses to the translator, as well as an identification of the distinctive features of the author’s literary style, with particular attention to the importance of cultural references (mainly to Irish culture) in his works. These two components supported the decision-making during the translation process.
