dc.description.abstractEste trabalho terá como tema a tradução comentada da obra Falling Up. A Memoir of Second Chances. A prática translatória basear-se-á em pressupostos teóricos relevantes no âmbito da tradução de textos autobiográficos e proporcionará a reflexão sobre as escolhas de tradução feitas. Para o efeito, considerar-se-ão questões como a tipologia do texto de partida (TP), a incidência de termos culturais e de expressões idiomáticas, assim como a sua transferência para o texto de chegada (TC), a existência de referências intertextuais e interculturais. Depois de breves apontamentos sobre o autor, a obra e o texto autobiográfico, seguir-se-á uma proposta de tradução da obra para português, que permitirá a análise dos desafios de tradução, assim como as especificidades da tradução do texto autobiográfico, as dificuldades categorizadas e explanadas, e a reflexão sobre os casos em estudo relacionando-os com a bibliografia teórica. No capítulo dedicado ao enquadramento na cultura americana, serão explorados os elementos culturais intrínsecos à obra, visando não apenas a tradução linguística, mas também um transporte culturalmente fidedigno, que capture a essência da experiência americana retratada na narrativa. As expetativas com este trabalho são de aprofundamento e desenvolvimento de conhecimento e ferramentas relacionadas com a teoria e a prática da tradução, de forma a desenvolver trabalhos práticos e traduções de forma mais informada e metódica. Com este trabalho espero conseguir desenvolver ferramentas pessoais relacionadas com a tradução, aprofundar o meu conhecimento teórico-prático desta área de estudos e contribuir para a divulgação de textos de luso-descendentes. Por fim, a hipótese de trazer uma tradução desta obra ao conhecimento dos açorianos é uma expetativa motivadora para a realização refletida da sua tradução.pt_PT
dc.description.abstractABSTRACT: This work will consist of a commented translation of Falling Up. A Memoir of Second Chances. The translation practice will be based on theoretical assumptions relevant to the translation of autobiographical texts and will provide an opportunity to reflect on the translation choices that were made. To this end, we will consider issues such as the typology of the source text (ST), the incidence of cultural terms and idiomatic expressions, as well as their transfer to the target text (TT), the existence of intertextual and intercultural references. After brief notes on the author, the work and the autobiographical text, a proposal for translating the work into Portuguese will follow, which will allow an analysis of the translation challenges, as well as the specificities of translating the autobiographical text, the difficulties categorized and explained, and a reflection on the case studies, relating them to the theoretical bibliography. In the chapter dedicated to the framework of American culture, the cultural elements inherent to the work will be explored, aiming not only for an accurate linguistic translation, but also for a culturally authentic one that captures the essence of the American experience portrayed in the narrative. The expectations with this work are to deepen and develop knowledge and tools related to the theory and practice of translation, to develop practical work and translations in a more informed and methodical way. Knowledge about the literature of Portuguese descendants was also a high motivation to start this study, as it is an example of diasporic identity that brings Azorean culture closer to the chosen host culture, in this case from the North American one. With this work, I hope to be able to develop personal tools related to translation, deepen my theoretical and practical knowledge of this area of study and contribute to the dissemination of texts by people of Portuguese descent. Finally, the chance to bring a translation of this work to the attention of Azoreans is a motivating expectation for the precise realization of its translation and the development of practical tools.pt_PT
