dc.description.abstractO presente estudo consiste numa análise comparativa entre As Ilhas Desconhecidas: Notas e Paisagens, um clássico da literatura portuguesa de viagens que narra a incursão do autor, Raul Brandão, pelas ilhas dos Açores e da Madeira, e a sua tradução para língua inglesa – The Unknown Islands: Notes and Landscapes – levada a cabo por David Brookshaw, professor emérito de Estudos Luso-brasileiros na Universidade de Bristol. Após uma reflexão sobre a componente extratextual, composta pela génese da obra, pelo contexto em que ocorre a tradução, os agentes envolvidos e o papel que desempenham, procede-se à análise de alguns casos de tradução considerados mais representativos, os quais se agruparam por categorias, tendo em conta aspetos linguísticos e culturais que colocam desafios ao tradutor, nomeadamente relativos ao léxico regional, à linguagem popular, às festividades, às tradições e ofícios e às referências culturais. A finalidade última do estudo é compreender que condições possibilitaram a tradução da obra para língua inglesa e em que medida a versão inglesa difere da versão portuguesa.pt_PT
dc.description.abstractABSTRACT: This thesis is a comparative analysis between As Ilhas Desconhecidas: Notas e Paisagens, a classic work of Portuguese travel literature which narrates the incursion of its author, Raul Brandão, in the islands of the Azores and Madeira, and its translation into English – The Unknown Islands: Notes and Landscapes – carried out by David Brookshaw, emeritus professor of Luso-Brazilian studies at the University of Bristol. Considerations about the extratextual components, consisting of the work’s genesis, the translation’s context, the agents involved and their role, are followed by the analysis of some excerpts, thought to be more representative, which have been gathered in categories, considering linguistic and cultural features that are challenging for the translator, such as regional lexis, popular language, local celebrations, traditions and occupations, and cultural references. The ultimate aim of this study is to understand the conditions that enabled this work’s translation into English and to what extent the English version diverges from the Portuguese one.en
