- Inventory of Arthropods of Azorean Urban GardensPublication . Borges, Paulo A. V.; Lamelas-López, LucasThe data we present are part of the long-term project SLAM (Long Term Ecological Study of the Impacts of Climate Change in the natural forest of Azores) aiming to assess the impact of biodiversity erosion drivers on Azorean native biota, using long-term ecological data. Additionally to SLAM traps, nocturnal Active Aerial Searching and nocturnal Foliage Beating methods were used to sample, between 2017 and 2018, the arthropod biodiversity on two historical urban gardens of Azores, the “Jardim Botânico” of Faial Island, and “Jardim Duque da Terceira” of Terceira Island. This publication includes new data and updates the knowledge about the arthropod diversity and taxonomy of Arteaga et al. 2020, and contributes to the study of the urban gardens role to conservation of native biota.
- Monitoring grassland’s arthropods in a in situ climate change experimentation (Terceira, Azores, Portugal)Publication . Wallon, Sophie; Borges, Paulo A. V.; Elias, Rui B.The data presented are part of the project PASTURCLIM (Impact of climate change on pasture’s productivity and nutritional composition in the Azores). The project aims to assess consequences of climate change (in this case, increasing temperature) on the grass production and quality for cattle forage. The project also aims to assess changes in the arthropod’s community associated to the grassland. An in situ experimentation was set up using Open Top Chambers (OTC’s), in order to simulate an increasing of temperature (average of +1.5⁰C) on grassland. In this paper, we present data relative to the arthropods collection. Overall, we collected 41,351 specimens belonging to four classes, 15 orders, 60 families and 171 morphospecies (including 34 taxa identified only at order, family of genus level). Therefore, for only 137 taxa we have a scientific name associated (n = 38918).
- Updated Checklist of Arthropods from Azores (Portugal)Publication . Borges, Paulo A. V.; Lamelas-López, Lucas; Andrade, Rui; Lhoumeau, Sébastien; Vieira, Virgilio; Soares, António O.; Borges, Isabel; Boieiro, Mário; Cardoso, Pedro; Crespo, Luís C.; Karsholt, Ole; Assing, Volker; Schülke, Michael; Serrano, Artur R. M.; Quartau, José A.The data we present consists in an updated checklist of the Azorean arthropods. The checklist compile known records based on published literature, unpublished data, and new records at archipelago and island levels. This publication represents the most recent information about distribution of introduced, native and endemic arthropods in the Azores archipelago. Currently the total number of terrestrial arthropod taxa (species and subspecies) in the Azores is estimated of about 2417 belonging to 14 classes, 53 orders, 438 families, 1554 genera and 2397 species and 149 individual subspecies. The most diverse orders of Azorean arthropods are: Coleoptera (585 taxa), Diptera (422 taxa), Hemiptera (338 taxa), Hymenoptera (162 taxa), Lepidoptera (159 taxa) and Araneae (132 taxa). A total of 275 endemic taxa are currently known (231 species and 44 subspecies), belonging to 8 classes and 22 orders. São Miguel, Terceira and Pico are the islands with higher number of endemic species and subspecies. Compared to the other nearest Macaronesian archipelagos (Madeira and Canaries), the Azorean arthropod fauna is characterized by a lower percentage of endemism and a high proportion of exotic introduced species.
